The appellant and property owner, Carlyle Tippetts, appeared before the Board re-
questing a variance from "Sec. 502" and "Table 33-A" of the City Building Code.
The former requires that when an exisitng building changes occupancy
classification the building must be issued a new certificate of occupancy and
comply with the code for the new occupancy. The latter provision would require
that a ramp be installed for vheelchair access. Mr. Tippetts was requesting
that the wheelchair ramp provisiop he waived because of the nature of his business.
He has an insurance company and doesn't have many walk-in clients. Most of
the time he goes to the clients homes. The house that he wishes to convert to
a business has 1000 square feet and he intends to be the sole occupant.
A letter was read to the Board from the Commission on Disability, who strongly
oppose Mr. Tippett's request. The commission felt that all public businesses
should be wheelchair accessible, thereby giving the handicapped population more
freedom in choosing which firms to patronize.
Motion was made that in view of the fact that it was an insurance business and
most customers would not be coming to the office, that the variance be approved
strictly for his insurance business. It would not apply to leasing space to another
business. MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
The minutes of the last meeting were approved. The Board was invited to a
retirement party for Bill Waldo and a gift was discussed.
Meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Bill Brenner, Chairman
