Dear Mr. Phillips,
Shear Engineering Corporation conducted foundation excavation observations for the above
referenced site on Monday, June 11, 2001. The soils noted at the bottom of the basement
excavation consisted primarily of silty sand with gravel and cobbles. The soils noted at the
bottom of the garage excavation consisted primarily of sandy clay.
It is noted that the geotechnical investigation report for Rigden Farm Filing One was prepared
prior to subdivision fill placement. The soil conditions below the fill material were noted by
Terracon Consultants Western, Inc. in their geotechnical investigation report for Rigden Farm
Filing One titled; "Preliminary Geotechnical Engineering Report, Colorado State University,
Rigden Farm, Drake Road and County Road 9, Fort Collins, Colorado;" Terracon Project No:
20975154; report dated October 15, 1997.
Boring Logs No. 10 and No. 11 were the nearest borings taken to this site. Boring Log No. 10
indicated sandy lean clay to a depth of nine and one half feet (9.5'), underlain by well -graded
sand with gravel to a depth of fifteen feet (15'), the bottom of the boring. Boring Log No. 11
indicated sandy lean clay to a depth of thirteen feet (13'), underlain by sandy lean clay with
gravel to a depth of sixteen feet (16'), underlain by well graded sand with gravel to a depth of
twenty one feet (21') underlain by weathered siltstone and claystone to twenty three and one half
feet (23.5') underlain by siltstone and claystone to the hottom of the horinp, of twenty five feet
(25')
This lot is suitable for a spread footing foundation system as recommended by Terracon
Consultants Western, Inc. in the subdivision geotechnical investigation report noted. The
foundation plan, which was prepared by Shear Engineering Corporation for the proposed
residence and dated April, 2001, was used. Footings were designed for a maximum allowable
bearing capacity of 1,000 pounds per square foot (dead load plus full live load) and a minimum
dead load of 250 pounds per square foot according to the recommendations of the geotechnical
investigation report for Rigden Farm Filing One.
Shear Engineering Corporation was present on Tuesday, June 12, 2001 for footing construction
observations. Shear Engineering Corporation was present on Friday, June 15, 2001 in order to
conduct foundation wall steel placement observations.

All observations were made to confirm that footing construction and wall steel placement was
completed in substantial compliance with the direction, details and specifications noted on the
foundation plan. And in substantial compliance with the recommendations of the geotechnical
investigation report.

Groundwater was not evident in the excavation. Waterproofing is not required. At a minimum,
all foundation walls shall be dampproofed according to the requirements of the 1997 UBC,
Appendix Chapter 18, Waterproofing and Dampproofing Foundations. A foundation drain
system will be required. A sump pit to be located in the basement is recommended as a
secondary drain outfall.
