I am seeking a building permit to enclose an existing porch on my home. My address is
309 s Grant in Ft Collins. I have contacted Reyes Sarmiento from Crown Enterprises.
This company is a structural engineering firm. Reyes did tests on my home and has
assured me that enclosing the porch will not be a structural problem. He liked the idea
and felt it would give symmetry to the home.
The home currently has an open porch on the second floor on the north side. I want to
enclose this porch and make it a sleeping porch. This will match the existing sleeping
porch on the south side of the home. The home will be more proportional and will create
balance with the existing low pitch roof.
The reasons for enclosing this porch are:
1. Safety —there is a low guard rail (18 inches high) on the porch and it is very
dangerous. I am always worried that someone is going to fall of the 2"d floor
porch
2. Hot --The house is hot and does not have air conditioning; the sleeping porch on
the south side has been a nice addition.
3. Aesthetics -I feel the enclosed porch will really balance the house. The north
sleeping porch will look the exactly like the south sleeping porch, when viewing
the home from the front. The home is mostly built with blond brick but the
sleeping porch on the south was made from wood. The new sleeping porch will
also be made from wood not the blond brick.
I have located a company that can make quarter saw oak windows like the ones on the
south porch. I have also found used roof tiles that are exactly like the existing tiles. It is
important that this enclosed porch matches the south addition.
I want this to look like it was built when the south sleeping porch was built.
Let me know when I can get the remodeling permit. I have contacted several builders
whom are licensed and interested in the project. I have not secured a contractor but will
do so when I get approval. I have contractors that are interested in this project and all are
licensed and have experience remodeling older homes. I will decide whom to use as soon
as I get your ok. A big factor will be which contractor can do the job in a timely manner.
I would like this done quickly, hopefully before school starts.
Thanks
