EARTH ENGINEERING
COMPANY, INC.
As requested, on December 20, 2011 and January 11 and 19, 2012, Earth Engineering Company,
Inc. (EEC) representatives provided construction observation and testing services to you for the
referenced project. Those services were provided on a part-time basis and included testing of
cast -in -place concrete for the referenced project.
During the referenced date, EEC personnel observed and tested Portland cement concrete
delivered to the site for placement for the monolithic slabs -on -grade for the detached garages for
the referenced project. Field testing performed on the plastic concrete included slump, air
content, and concrete temperature. Concrete test cylinders were cast from representative samples
for laboratory curing and compressive strength testing. Results of the field and laboratory tests
performed during the referenced dates are provided w7th this report.
We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you on this project. If you have any questions
concerning this report, or if we can be of further service to you in any other way, please do not
hesitate to contact us.
Very truly yours,

EEC Project No. 11-01-208
Mr. Brex:
EEC.
EARTH ENGINEERING
COMPANY, INC.
As requested, Earth Engineering Company, Inc. (EEC) personnel have completed an
observation of the foundation bearing materials for garage footing foundations for the
referenced project. The results of those observations are included with this report.
On December 9, 2011, EEC personnel observed foundation bearing materials for the
garage foundation footings for the referenced multi -family residence. We understand the
garages will be lightly loaded wood frame structures with a slab -on -grade. At the time of
our field observations, most of the garage area had been overexcavated to approximate 4
feet below present site grades. The materials observed in the garage overexcavation area
observed generally consisted of brown sandy clay soils. Calibrated hand penetrometer
tests at the garage overexcavation area indicated the brown sandy clay soils were very
stiff in consistency.
The foundation bearing observation letter for this project dated December 1, 2011,
recommended overexcavation down to the natural brown sandy clay soils and
replacement with moisture conditioned, controlled fill at the at -grade (i.e. garage) areas
of the structure. Due to the results of recent observations, it is our opinion an
overexcavation and replacement with moisture conditioned, controlled fill would be
required as per the recommendations in the above referenced letter at the at -grade areas

of the structure. Fill soils required to develop foundation and floor slab support should
consist of approved, imported low- volume change fill free from organic matter and
debris. Class 7 structural fill or other approved granular soils could be used as backfill in
this area. The fill soils should be placed in loose lifts not to exceed 9 inches thick,
adjusted in moisture content and compacted to be at least 95% of the material's maximum
dry density as determined in accordance with ASTM Specification D-698, the standard
Proctor procedure. The moisture content of the fill soils should be adjusted to a workable
moisture at the time of compaction.

Mr. Brex:
EARTH ENGINEERING
COMPANY, INc.
On January 11, 2012, Earth Engineering Company, Inc. (EEC) personnel provided
construction observation services you requested for the referenced project. Those services
included observation of the grade beam reinforcing prior to the placement of cast -in -place
concrete at the east middle double car garage. The grade beams were approximately 12
inches wide by 36 inches deep. Two #5 horizontal rebar were in the process of being
placed in the grade beams at the top and bottom of the grade beam walls. Lap lengths
were checked and appeared to meet the minimum required lengths.
At the time of our observations, it appeared that the grade beam dimensions and observed
reinforcing steel had been placed in general accordance with the construction plans
prepared by Realarchitecture, Project No. 1107, dated June 22, 2011.
We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you on this project. If you have any

EEC Project No. 11-01-208
Mr. Brex:
On December 13, 2011, a representative of Earth Engineering Company, Inc. (EEC)
provided construction observation and testing for the referenced project. The
construction observation and testing was completed on a part-time, on -call basis and
included field density testing of fill placed to develop the detached garages subgrade and
foundation bearing for the referenced multi -family structure. The results of the
construction observation and testing completed during the referenced period are included
with this report.
During the referenced period, EEC personnel obtained one representative sample of the
fill materials at the site for laboratory evaluation of the moisture -density relationship of
the fill material. Laboratory testing performed included standard Proctor (ASTM
Specification D-698) testing. Results of the laboratory testing completed by EEC
personnel during the referenced period are shown on the attached summary sheet. The
standard Proctor test results were used to evaluate the percent compaction of the backfill
materials in the field.
On the referenced date, an EEC representative completed field density testing on newly
placed fill materials in the area of the referenced duplex structure. The field density
testing was conducted at random locations at the approximate subgrade elevation within

the fill and was performed in general accordance with ASTM Specification D-6938. The
final field density test results are shown on the attached summary sheet and met the
project requirements for compaction. While the overexcavation procedures would reduce
the potential for post -construction movement, some movement of lightly loaded elements
could occur and should be expected. Deeper overexcavation would reduce the potential
for movement; however, that risk cannot be eliminated.
