Dear Mr. Peil,
Shear Engineering Corporation conducted detached garage foundation excavation observations
at the above referenced address on Tuesday, January 28, 2003. The soils noted at the bottom of
the garage excavation consisted primarily of sandy clay. The soil exhibits moderate bearing
capacities with low to moderate swell potential, based on the clay content observed.
This lot is suitable for a spread footing foundation system. The foundation plan, which was
prepared by Shear Engineering Corporation and dated December, 2002, was used. Footings were
designed for an assumed maximum allowable bearing capacity of 1,500 pounds per square foot
(dead load plus full live load) and an assumed minimum dead load of 500 pounds per square
foot.
Shear Engineering Corporation was present on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 for footing
construction observations. Shear Engineering Corporation was present on Wednesday, February
12, 2003 for wall steel placement observations. All observations were made to confirm that
footing construction and wall steel placement was completed in substantial compliance with the
direction, details and specifications noted on the foundation plan.
