The University Park Holiday Inn was constructed in 1984. The 1993 edition of n1p.a.
was used in the design of the sprinkler system. This edition of the handbook required
that all canopies and covered docks needed sprinkler protection. Note: 4-4.10.2
Sprinklers shall be installed under exterior combustible roofs or canopies exceeding 4 ft
in width.
Fxcention: Sprinklers may be omitted where construction is noncombustible and
areas under the canopies are not used for storage or handling.
Exterior canopies exceeding 4 ft in width are to be sprinklered if combustible
construction weather goods are stored or handled under it. If construction is non
combustible and the area under is essentially restricted to pedestrian use, sprinklers may
be omitted.
The Holiday Inn entryway, is used for vehicle traffic therefore it is required to be
sprinklered.
In the 1987 edition of 13 section 4-4.10.2 the wording is the same except that
automobiles stopping brie to pick up or droll o passengers would not be considered
storage has been added.
If the building was built using the sprinkler standards after the 1983 edition the canopy
would not required sprinklers,

Dear Joe,
I would like to requen that PFA would allow us to remove the existing sprinkler system from our front
entrance awning. in January of 1999 the pressure valve tripped and released water into the lines. There was
no warning that the valve tripped and when the litres thawed, it flooded the front enhance of the hotel. We
replaced the valve and repaired the r water line that was broken. After starting the system back up, it was
discovered that the I" Imes running through the awning were also bmken. To do the repairs we will have to
pull the sheet rock down from the bottom of the awning. Besides the cost of the repairs, I am more
concerned of the inconvenience to our guests for that 7 to 10 days of construction in our main entrance.
Thanks for your consideration in this matter and I will await your decision.
