At your request, I have reviewed the TJI® joist used in the referenced
construction. You have provided the following information for the above
referenced project:
The 11 7/8" TJI® 110 Joist at 16" on center has an out to out span of 13'3'/z" and
supports floor loading of 40PSF live load and 10PSF dead load. This joist has a
4" long by 6" deep section removed from the top centered at 97' along it's
length.
With consideration of the damage, the TJI®joist'is STRUCTURALLY
INADEQUATE as is. To remedy the situation, the joist should be headered on
both sides of the cut to the adjacent single joists by using a TJI header as shown
on the enclosed detail 1-12A. The spacing between headers should not exceed
121, O.C.
Please note that I have not reviewed the project plans to determine if the product
application, design loads, or dimensions are correct. It is important the

• Install tight to bottom flange.
• Attach with ten 10d (3") box nails, clinched when possible.
• If necessary, increase filler and bdcker block height for face
mount hangers and maintain 1/8" gap at top of joist
• Filler and backer block dimensions should accommodate
required nailing without splitting.
