Terracon Consultants, Inc. understands that a 2-ply 1-3/4 inch by 9-1/2 inch Laminated
Veneer Lumber beam, located in the basement of the above referenced residence and
spanning north to south, was notched and needs additional support. Approximately 12
inches from the north end of the beam, a 3-1/2 inch deep by 32 inch long notch was cut
into the underside of the beam. One 3/8 inch steel plate was secured to the east side
of the beam using (6) 112 inch diameter bolts.
Terracon Consultants, Inc. has determined that the following additional support is
required for the beam. One additional 318 inch thick steel plate, identical to the existing
steel plate, shall be secured to the east side of the beam. The second steel plate shall
be secured to the first plate and the LVL beam using the existing (6) 1/2 inch diameter
bolts; three additional 1/2 inch diameter bolts should be added above the notched
portion of the beam, equally spaced. The floor joists shall be secured to the beam
using (2) 3 inch long screws, one on each side of the bottom flange. The flanges of the
floor joists shall be pre -drilled to avoid splitting the flange. Each joist shall be secured
to the beam, the entire length of the beam.
Terracon Consultants, Inc. understands that the owner wishes to cut a pass through in
the joists supporting the main floor. Manufacturer specifications allow the following
round hole size for 9-1/2 inch floor joists:
