Dear Mr. Schermerhorn,
Shear Engineering Corporation had previously provided header recommendations for the
proposed basement windows being provided at the above referenced address. The
recommendations and details were provided in a letter dated June 19, 2000. The initial letter and
exhibit is attached here for immediate reference. The letter indicated the header requirement to
be a single (1) 6" x 6" x 3/8" steel angle lintel at each of the three (3) window locations. For
reasons unknown, a quadruple (4) 2x6 header was installed at each window opening and the steel
angle was disregarded. Shear Engineering Corporation analyzed the 2x6 headers and found them
to be inadequate for the peak anticipated loading conditions from above. Shear Engineering
Corporation recommended attaching the originally designed steel angle lintel to the inside of the
2x6 header. The steel angle shall be bolted to the existing 2x6 header. Half -inch (1/2") thru bolts
at twelve -inch (12") spacing will provide the load transferring mechanism between the steel
angle and the existing 2x6 header, that will allow the beam to work as a composite system. See
attached exhibit for details. Double (2) 2x8 trim studs will be required on each side of the
window opening to provide adequate bearing for the peak anticipated loading on the window
header. The shear capacity of the quadruple (4) 2x6 header is also adequate for the peak
anticipated loading.
The remodel plan that was prepared by Associates in Building and Design, LTD and reviewed by
Shear Engineering Corporation indicated all headers to be double (2) 2x12's unless noted
otherwise. The maximum header depth allowable above the new opening that was cut between
the kitchen and the new green house was eight and one-half inches (8 '/2"). Shear Engineering
Corporation recommended- installing a double (2} 1 3/4"x 8 1;2" microllam in place of the
double (2) 2x12's. The header opening is 48" in width and supports upper floor, roof and wall
load. Our analysis indicates that the double (2) 1 3/4"x 8 1/2" microllam is adequate to support
the peak anticipated loading.
If you have any questions concerning our analysis, please call at (970) 226-5334.
Sincerely,
Wyatt M. Knutson
