Dear Mr. Olick,
Shear Engineering Corporation conducted foundation excavation observations for the above
referenced address on Thursday, July 13, 2000. The soils noted at the bottom of the basement
excavation consisted primarily of silty clay with gravel. The soils noted at the bottom of the
upper garage footing excavation also consisted primarily of silty clay with gravel. A test hole
was dug to three feet (3') below the basement excavation. Weathered claystone bedrock was
noted at one foot (F) below the basement excavation. The soils noted in the excavation are
generally consistent with the soils profiles provided in the geotechnical investigation report for
Harmony Ridge P.U.D. titled "Subsurface Exploration Report, Harmony Ridge P.U.D., Fort
Collins, Colorado"; by Earth Engineering Consultants, Inc.; EEC project number 1972027;
report dated May 5, 1997.
Boring Logs B7 and B8 were the nearest borings taken to this site. Boring Log B7 indicated silty
sand with gravel to a depth of eight and one half feet (8.5') underlain by clayey gravelly sand to a
depth of thirteen feet (13') followed by highly weathered claystone for the remainder of the
boring of twenty and one half feet (20.5'). Boring Log B8 indicated clayey silty sand and gravel
to a depth of five and one half feet (5.5') underlain by weathered claystone for the remainder of
the boring of twenty and one half feet (20.5').
This lot will require a drilled pier (caisson) foundation system as recommended in the
geotechnical investigation report. The foundation plan for the proposed residence, which was
prepared by Shear Engineering Corporation and dated July, 2000, was used.
Shear Engineering Corporation was present on Monday, July 24, 2000 in order to conduct
caisson construction observations. Shear Engineering Corporation was present on Monday, July
31, 2000 for foundation wall steel placement observations. Shear Engineering Corporation was
present on Thursday, September 21, 2000 for front porch foundation wall steel placement
observations. Shear Engineering Corporation was present on Wednesday, August 23, 2000 for
structural wood floor framing observations.
All observations were made to confirm that caisson construction, foundation wall steel
placement and structural wood floor framing was completed in substantial compliance with the
direction, details and specifications noted on the foundation plan. And in substantial compliance
withtherecommendationsofthe geotechnical -investigation -report.

All caisson construction, foundation wall steel placement and structural wood floor framing was
completed in substantial compliance with the direction, details and specifications noted on the
foundation plan and with the recommendations of the geotechnical investigation report.
Groundwater was not evident in the basement excavation. Waterproofing is not required. All
foundation walls shall be dampproofed according to the requirements of 1997 UBC, Appendix
Chapter 18, Waterproofing and Dampproofing Foundations. A foundation drain system will be
required. A sump pit, located in the basement, is recommended as a secondary drain outfall.
If you have any questions concerning our observations, please call at (970) 226-5334.
Sincerely,
Brian W. Shear, P. E. `
