Dear Ms. Jekel:
Chester C. Smith, P.E.
Larry G. O'Dell, P.E.
Neil R. Sherrod, C.P.G.
On April 18, 1995 an engineer from Empire Laboratories visited the above -referenced site as
requested. The purpose of this visit was to render an opinion based upon visual observations
and site measurements regarding the feasibility of enlarging an existing basement window to
a 4 foot by 4 foot egress basement window.
It is our understanding that the existing window on the west basement wall near the
northwest corner which measures 22 inches tall by 32 inches wide is to be enlarged to a 4
foot by 4 foot window. The new window will line up at the south edge of the existing
window. The foundation is cast -in -place concrete.
Based on our observations and site measurements, it is our opinion that it is feasible to
enlarge the existing basement window on the west basement wall. It is recommended that
two 3% by 3 t/2 by A inch steel angles be placed over the top of the new 4 foot opening. The
vertical legs of the angles should extend into the space between the sill plate and the brick
veneer. One horizontal leg should support the sill plate, the other the brick veneer. The
angles may rest on the 8-inch concrete wall on either end or on 2x8 treated trimmers each
side of the opening.
