RE: People with Disabilities: Communication Accessibility and Outreach Efforts
Request:
Staff is asked to provide Council with an update on the accessibility of City communication
and resources for community members with disabilities, and current outreach efforts.
Bottom Line:
The City follows standards and best practices for ensuring communication is accessible to
people who have vision or hearing disabilities. The City is working with community partners to
provide outreach and meaningful support for people with disabilities.
Communication Accessibility:
Information posted on the City’s coronavirus webpage:
https://www.fcgov.com/eps/coronavirus is accessible to those with vision or hearing
disabilities, including those who are also native Spanish speakers.
FCTV video streams, such as the Telephone Town Hall on 3/23/20, are accessible
through captioning (in several languages) and audible for those with low or no vision.
Additionally, Telephone Town Halls scheduled for 4/06 and 4/09/20 included access for
people with disabilities who are native Spanish speakers. Telecommunication for the
deaf is available through the State’s Relay Colorado (711).
Information posted on social media is accessible; additionally, both Google and
Microsoft offer enhanced accessibility tools such as high contrast and narration.
Outreach Efforts
City staff connects with community partners such as Larimer County, The Arc and
Easter Seals to identify needs and resources specific to people with disabilities.
City staff checks in with Commission on Disability members to identify current needs.
