Box 580 Fort Collins, CO 80522.0580 970.221.6750 970.224.6134- fax fcgov.com/planning MEMORANDUM DATE: January 29, 2020 TO: Mayor Wade Troxell and City Councilmembers THRU: Darin Atteberry, City Manager Jeff Mihelich, Deputy City Manager Caryn Champine, Planning Development and Transportation Director Tom Leeson, Community Development and Neighborhood Services Director Rebecca Everette, Development Review Manager FROM: Pete Wray, Senior Planner RE: Update to City of Fort Collins Population Estimate The purpose of this memo is to inform and update Council on the annual City of Fort Collins population estimate. Background City Planning staff monitors this demographic trend each year, working directly with the State Demographer Office (SDO). A final estimate by the SDO for the present year (2020) is typically not completed until July of the following year (2021). Staff relies on the SDO calculations for a final estimate and has recently received an updated City population that will replace our preliminary estimate for 2019 (see attached Table). Using permits issued for new housing units, the City has produced a preliminary population estimate of 174,871 for 2020, which can be seen in greater detail in the attached Table. The City of Fort Collins estimate and state estimate for 2020 will be replaced by the 2020 Census population count once released in March 2021.
