SUBJECT: Winter Cycling Education and Promotion Programs
Background
FC Moves has provided education and programming for winter commuting for several years. Our signature
winter event is Winter Bike to Work Day, which has occurred on the second Wednesday of December
since 2006. Additionally, we host free bike light giveaways during Light Up the Night events and host a
winter bicycling safety and educational course called Cycling in Winter. Furthermore, we provide
educational and safety related messaging in our monthly e‐newsletter, Momentum, as well as on our
social media channels.
Winter Bike to Work Day
On Wednesday, December 11, 2019, more than 1,700 community members participated in our 13th annual
Winter Bike to Work Day (WBTWD) event. WBTWD continues a trend of growth, though seasonal
conditions play a role in overall event participation.

In 2019, FC Moves implemented a safety messaging campaign to raise awareness about safe behaviors
leading up to and during WBTWD, in part due to the heavy winter storm we experienced prior to the event
as well as to disseminate general information to help community members practice safe winter cycling
behaviors. We leveraged our social media accounts to provide general winter cycling safety tips and
messages. During WBTWD, station hosts were directed to pass out survey flyers that also included safety
messaging to participants.
Additionally, FC Moves and Bike Fort Collins passed out several hundred bike bells to WBTWD participants.
Below are additional stats about WBTWD in 2019:
1,700 estimated individual participants.
Nearly 4,000 visits to breakfast stations.
42 public breakfast stations hosted by 107 local business and organizational partners.
Additional Winter Programming
In addition to WBTWD, FC Moves plans and hosts a variety of educational and encouragement events in
the colder months:
Light Up the Night: bike light giveaways hosted at City facilities.
Cycling in Winter: free educational class for the public about safe winter cycling tips, tricks, and
behaviors.
Social media: leverage social media to disseminate safe winter cycling information.
Momentum: FC Moves’ e‐newsletter, which routinely contains seasonal educational messaging,
sent to more than 5,000 subscribers.
Next Steps
As part of our ongoing efforts to disseminate bicycling safety messaging to the community, FC Moves
plans to continue developing innovative messages, investigate new dissemination strategies, and
collaborate with internal and external partners to disseminate seasonal cycling safety information.
