HomeMy WebLinkAboutMemo - Mail Packet - 1/24/2023 - 10 - Memorandum From Fort Collins Human Relations Commission Re: Invitation To The Human Library Program: “Being Me In Fort Collins” DATE: January 17, 2023 TO: Mayor Jeni Arndt City Councilmembers City Manager Kelly DiMartino CC: Sarah Kane Claudia Menendez Rachael Johnson FROM: The City of Fort Collins Human Relations Commission RE: Invitation to the Human Library Program: “Being Me in Fort Collins” On behalf of the Human Library program co-sponsors – the City of Fort Collins Office of Equity & Inclusion, the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery, Poudre River Public Library District, and the City of Fort Collins Human Relations Commission – we wish to invite you to this unique community event scheduled for Sunday, February 26th, from 2:00-5:00pm at the Museum of Discovery. The Human Library is a safe and non-judgmental forum for people to engage in difficult conversations and gain a deeper understanding of diverse human experiences. Typical libraries offer books that can be borrowed, but the Human Library allows participants – or Readers – to borrow a human Book to engage in conversations about their unique stories, particularly their experiences in Fort Collins regarding their identity/identities, e.g., Black, gay, body artist, wheelchair user, etc. You, as a Reader, will have the opportunity to check out four human Books, community volunteers who have been subjected to bias, stereotyping or intolerance due to their lifestyle, race, beliefs, disability, etc., and have these curious and often taboo conversations. Our hope is that both Readers and Books gain new understandings that advance acceptance and inclusion among diverse groups in our community. We hope that you will join us for this free program designed to encourage all to “unjudge” a human Book by its cover. Please visit the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery website (https://fcmod.org) to register directly for this event, or feel free to send your confirmation to bethjaeger53@gmail.com. In advance, thank you for your interest in the Human Library program.
