Councilmember Francis moved to approve the April 11 minutes. Councilmember Gutowsky seconded.

Summary
• Discussion on the sharing Cities is a great reminder on how Futures is a space for us to dream
about the future together and is also a reminder that the actions we take today impact our future.
• Sharing Cities connects to different council adopted priorities such as regionalism, mobility,
Climate, waste and housing
• Considered the theme of what it means to be a City

• Consider how decisions we make today will affect our Future
o Example: Berkely and plastics policy—decisions made 40 years ago playing out today…
• Consider how to engage community members and how to compensate them
o Example: how can engaging with underrepresented groups also be a talent pipeline?
• Consider how to create Shared spaces:
o Example: future of spaces for sharing around the clock
• Action: Consider how to use our current infrastructure and assets for sharing
o Example: Sustainable Timberline Recycling Center next year- how to build it out to be a
sharing space
• Action: New Economic Health strategic plan will have a component related to the circular
economy

Shareable
History of Sharing Cities
• 2011 inception—first sharing cities conference for Shareable
• Brought together multi-sector stakeholders to reimagine cities as platforms for sharing themselves
• Movement started in San Francisco and moved to other Cities including Seoul, Sweden and
Amsterdam
o Mayor Park—wanted to figure out how to tackle key challenges such as air pollution,
levels of dissatisfaction, high suicide rate, reconnect people together
o Looked at sharing as the method to address key challenges
o Looked at how to bring in sharing hubs into new and existing high rise buildings
• Over 100 cities worldwide have a sharing initiative
• Building blocks are there but what comes next?
o Need to have very concrete goals
o Consider what the necessary infrastructure is for sharing
Framework for scaling sharing Cities
• 1. Need a new story for Cities
o Strong story and strong vision for people to move forward and continue this work
o Cities success means there is meaningful participation
o As people we learn who we are through sense of place and from those around us
• 2. Localize Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
o Most success is to look at existing city goals/funding—how do fulfill plans while
incorporating these goals?
o Context we have now is based on decisions from 40+ years ago
o Examples of SDGs to focus on include:
Rethinking waste
Sharing festivals and regions, developing sharing libraries
• Example: Sharing Festival in Montreuil
• How to translate sharing to the community?
• Tool library –have tool library and larger sharing hub
Circular regions and the Circular Economy
Warp it reuse network tool
• Creates small networks within institutions for diversion of resources
from waste stream
• Post resources and make them available to anyone else within their
network
• Able to track metrics on getting rid of various materials
Food Cloud

• Connect large food distributers and food banks and have a middle group
of stakeholders to help with the distribution of food from grocery stores
to food banks
• People: Upgrade and Mobilize
• 3. Mobilizing people: Consider how best to bring people together to be part of projects
o Example: Participatory Budgeting
o Example: Everyone, Everyday project
o Example: Consider how to build into existing resources
• 4. Build into policy
o Example: Industrial commons in North Carolina
• 5. Create infrastructure for sharing
o Example: Super blocks in Barcelona and rethinking streets
• 6. Develop services by the people
o Create new business models
Q&A/Discussion
• Consider how to rethink civic engagement—how to get lots of people engaged
• Consider how to shift to more models for creation
o Example-How could we repurpose the Recreator?
o How can we better work with partners such as the Library, CSU or even use the
Timberline Recycling Center?
• Is it more effective to have big, large goals? Or better to have specific goals to engage people?
o Good to set a “north star” vision 100 years in the future and then have smaller steps/goals
along the way. What is the roadmap?

• What do committee members think is working well and what to you want to test and try?
o If it is a Council committee, can we change the rules around cancelling the meeting if
there isn’t a quorum?
o Love the active chat, and also more fun to have people pop on to chat and share to make
it a space where it doesn’t feel like a council space.
o Support for keeping Futures a virtual meeting
• What topics/speakers would the committee members like to prioritize for the rest of the term?
o Enjoy the topics that we have had
o DDA does big ideas/big or small
Some time at the beginning of for community members to share ideas for 30+
years
I.e., focus on collaboration—with other local entities and regionalism
o Consider having staff come and speak about major long-term projects and planning
efforts
i.e. future of policing, or different utilities
• Concern was raised about losing the “future” part of the discussion—continue to stay true to
considering trends and challenges that will influence the City on the 50+ year horizon
• Really powerful that we have Council involved and in the room with Community
o Current structure is very powerful in many ways—try not to jump a long way from that
Bloomberg Updates
• Final wrap on Bloomberg initiative that City was a part of. There will be other future
opportunities
