Update
Four City departments and several community organizations are working on an application to
become a certified Bird City, including World Migratory Bird Day activities and a resolution
committing the City to future Migratory Bird Day acknowledgement and celebration. The
resolution is scheduled to be brought to City Council at its June 21 meeting. The Bird City
application is on track to be submitted by the July 1 deadline.
Invitation
A key element of City Council priority is celebrating World
Migratory Bird Day, which falls on Saturday, May 14, 2022. It coincides with the peak of spring
migration in Northern Colorado in early to mid-May.
Councilmembers, City leaders, and community members are invited to celebrate the return of
summer avian residents through the following activities on Saturday, May 14:
6:30 a.m. 11 a.m. Bird Banding and Birding Walks Pineridge Natural Area
Dixon Reservoir at Pineridge Natural Area is a great place for migrating birds. Check out the
bird banding efforts of the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies and see what might be passing
though. City of Fort Collins Natural Areas Volunteer Naturalists will be leading bird walks every
30 minutes starting at 7 a.m. to see what's around the reservoir. Bring your binoculars if you

11:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. Bird Box Decorating Primrose Studio at Reservoir Ridge Natural
Area
Habitat is important, both for migrating and for resident birds. Join the Northern Colorado
Wildlife Center and City of Fort Collins Natural Areas to decorate a bird box of your very own to
take home and provide additional habitat for our feathered friends. Limit one bird box per
household. Decoration will be done in 2 sessions to allow for adequate parking: 11:30 a.m. -
12:30 p.m. and 12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. Free, registration is required at fcgov.com/register
7:00 p.m. 10:00 p.m. Night Sky-Friendly Lighting and Owling Walks Bobcat Ridge
Natural Area
The peak of spring bird migration in northern Colorado happens after dark in the first half of
May. And each year birds are knocked off course by light pollution. Learn how to help local bird
life and other wildlife through night sky friendly lighting with the City of Fort Collins and Fort
Collins Audubon Society. Then, go with expert Volunteer Naturalists and ecologists on a night
hike to look for owls and other birds that are active after dark. Free, registration is required at
