RE: Council Priorities April 2022 Update
Bottom Line:
The Council Priorities Update Report and Calendarization spreadsheet is available at
https://www.fcgov.gom/council/. Updates are provided every-other month.
Council has scheduled a work session on May 10, 2022 to further review the Priorities.
Background:
Every two years, following a Council election, the newly seated Council participates in a
planning retreat to identify priorities and confirm strategic direction. City Council identified 31
items as priorities for its 2021-2023 term.
Priorities and milestones are tracked and reported through Clear Point and updates are
provided on an every-other month cadence. The April update report is provided with this memo.
The Regionalism priority and update will be addressed at the May 10 work sessions.
Below is some additional information on tree-related priorities.
The Forestry Division has been taking a multi-
Priorities related to trees. By the end of April, Forestry staff will have a report from Clarion
Associates LLC, a consultant that benchmarked the current Fort Collins tree-related Land Use
Codes to other peer cities with similar growing conditions and premier Forestry programs.
On May 17, Forestry will also be coming forth to Council for approval of an ordinance that
identifies trees as public infrastructure. Over the course of the year, Forestry will be working
through other opportunities within Chapter 27 of the Municipal Code to improve tree policies.
These efforts will guide future code updates to improve tree preservation, protection, and cost
recovery efforts (for FEMA designated emergencies) throughout the community and GMA.
Forestry has also drafted a 2023/2024 budget offer that would support an Urban Forest
Strategic Plan. If funded, this effort will inform other opportunities for improvement geared
around urban forest maintenance, preservation, long range planning and community
infrastructure. In addition, 1000 trees are currently being grown at Fort Collins Wholesale
Nursery for the September 17th Community Canopy Program tree sale.
