RE: Boards and Commissions: Review of Interview Process
Background:
The following memo regarding the interview process for boards and commissions does not apply to the
Planning and Zoning Commission. The interview process for P&Z was determined by City Council at the
June 15, 2021 City Council meeting.
Previous Interview Process Included:
The Councilmember team (consisting of the Council Liaison and one other Councilmember -
chosen based on availability) would review all applications received.
15-minute Zoom interviews were held with every candidate that applied.
The interview team would select who they wanted to recommend for the appointment.
A recommendation would go to Council for approval.
NEW Interview Process Proposal:
A team consisting of the Council Liaison one other Councilmember and the Staff Liaison review
all applications received.
o Staff liaison can offer insight into the status and needs of the board/commission.
Based on qualifications, the Council team decides who should be interviewed (no set number or
limit).
Staff provides support and optional interview questions for the Council team to use
in the interview.
Continue using Zoom as the interview platform but extend the interview time for more
thorough conversations.
Recommendation made by Council interview team and approved by rest of Council.
Timeline:
This process proposed would go into effect immediately for the interviews occurring in late August, early
September to fill vacancies. Applications for this round close August 13 th. This process can then be fine-
tuned for annual recruitment which will occur in November and December.
