Summary
• Discussion begins with examining the rate of change in the workplace from 2010 to
2020, key trends and the continued need to adapt
• Life-long learning is part of the fabric of the City organization and why the committee
exists
• Connecting back to the presentation in January by Josie Plaut on Becoming Fort Collins,
one of Fort Collins essence characteristics is that we are learning broadcaster
o Think about what this means for us as a community and the Future of Work
• Consider the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and humanity working side by side
o How will AI affect jobs and the human workplace
• COVID is an accelerator for the future of work and is also accelerating and highlighting
disparities in the community
• Growth mindset of 2020 is part of individual resilience and community resilience in Fort
Collins
• Consider who are the leaders in the transition towards the new workplace and make sure
that they are leading with authenticity, courage and empathy
Think Tank Item 6-2020: The Impact of COVID-19 and the New Normal of Work
• Jeanne begins by congratulating the City for being recognized as one of the most livable
Cities
• Book called “The 2020 Workplace: How Innovative Companies Attract, Develop, and
Keep Tomorrow’s Employees Today” is having its 10 year anniversary and there is a
chapter called “20 predictions for the 2020 workplace”
o Poll on where the group was in 2010
o 20 predictions for the 2020 workplace are discussed and group identifies 3 top
predictions that resonate with them:
▪ Mobile device has become office classroom and concierge
▪ Diversity will be a business issue rather than a human resource issue
▪ Work-life flexibility
• Discussion on how other chapters of the book discuss how major natural disasters,
climate change and pandemics could result in more changes to the 2020 workplace
• Jeanne moves into a discussion of top 5 predictions she still finds relevant today
o Life -long learning will be a business requirement
▪ 47% of US jobs face automation over the next 20 years—this will result in
a new normal and blended workforce with humans working with AI
▪ Technology is now so important in any of the work that we do. Machines
and automation still allow us to be more human
▪ Technical, cognitive, and human skills are necessary to thrive
3
▪ Consider how the City can play a role in promoting technical, cognitive,
and human skills at the K-12 level
o Mobile device is classroom and office
o Web commuters (gig workers) will increase
o “2020 mindset” required for a networked world
▪ Focusing on growth mindset—what we continue to see it isn’t about
acquiring new skills, knowledge and capabilities but it is now about a
mindset change
o Diversity and Inclusion is a business not an HR issue
▪ Mobile devices outpace the number of people
o Diversity & Inclusion Is Business Issue Not an HR Issue
• More than ever there is a need for human skills. The top 5 identified are:
o Creativity
o Persuasion
o Adaptability
o Emotional Intelligence
o Collaboration
• Starting to see focus on how to spark curiosity—this leads to development of even greater
human skills
• Jeanne moves the conversation to discuss the 5 themes from Virtual Future Workplace
Summit and COVID as an accelerator
o Worker wellbeing
▪ Worker wellbeing is less about a series of perks and is becoming more of a
strategy for the organization
▪ Need to do a better job looking at the whole person when we think about
wellbeing
▪ Also need to consider how the City organization can look at and foster
community wellbeing and resilience
o Remote working
▪ COVID has resulted in many people working from home and many
companies and organizations will continue remote work until at least July
2021 or even January 2022
▪ Implications of remote work include:
• Continued focus on building digital literacy
• Focus on leaders to inspire and lead remote teams
o Focus on leading with trust
o Remote work can lead to more communication
o This is the new normal and maybe the next normal which
will require more transparency
• Consider how best to promote team members’ wellbeing about
o Digital transformation—there will be new policies for the ethical and transparent
use of data
▪ City governments may be called upon to disclose how you plan on using
data just as companies have had to do
o Virtual learning
▪ Upskilling is moving from instructor led to virtual instructor led
4
o Agile work practices—consider how the role of the office is changing
▪ Trend for the future is that the physical office space may be optional
▪ Even when it is safe to return to the office, we may not see people in the
office 5 days a week
▪ It is important to set our own rhythm for workflow
• Jeanne closes with themes related to the new Workplace
o Authenticity
o Courage
o Having a vision for how to lead in this new normal for work
Comments/Q&A:
• Virtual learning is so important and very present—it is putting additional responsibilities
for family members to be at home and it has challenges
• Jeanne asks the Committee what fears they have related to the Future workplace
o There is a fear of how many people may be left behind. COVID is an accelerator
for many trends and it may not be possible for all members of the community to
take part in this new normal
o Question of how to ensure people are not left behind and how to best close the
gap?
▪ Focus has been on the digital divide and how to bridge that divide
• An empathetic approach to leadership is critical
o Walk in the shoes of team members to see and understand the many demands on
them
o Provide new resources for remote workers
o Leadership needs to look at whole person and total rewards
• Recognize that some community members may be having a difficult time due to
challenging home environments
o There are challenges to social distancing and lack of human interaction because of
COVID
o The Virtue Visit: The City has used some CARES dollars to pilot a program
provide electronic devices to senior community members so that they can connect
digitally with family members and community
• As work rhythm changes, there is a need to consider how to adapt days and times that
services to the community are provided. COVID-related changes to rhythm include:
o Seeing less use of public transportation
o Increase in drive thru lines
• While we are getting more efficient in this new workplace, still working on building the
relationship-based interactions that lead to process improvements.
• Continue to see a deep appreciation for City leadership and how it has adapted
Bloomberg updates from the Mayor
• Bloomberg News writer Frank Barry is writing a piece on the Lincoln Highway
