Re: 2020 Art in Public Places Midyear Report
Attached please find the 2020 Art in Public Places Midyear Report for City Council. This report
is delayed this year due to the cancellation of the APP Board meetings during COVID-19.
At the February 24, 2009 City Council Work Session, the Art in Public Places (APP) program
was reviewed. At that Work Session, the City Manager recommended that in addition to an
Annual Report, APP prepare a written midyear report on projects for City Council to review.
Since its inception in 1995, the APP program has commissioned over 160 public art projects and
over 320 completed transformer cabinet murals, over 120 painted pianos, 243 kid’s pavers, with
its impact seen throughout the Fort Collins community. Public art is everywhere: parks, gardens,
city facilities, alleyways, plazas, streetscapes, natural areas, utility sites, culture and recreation
facilities, trails, and transportation centers, adding to the city’s unique image and economic
health.
Please let us know if we can provide any additional information.
Thank you.

2020 MIDYEAR REPORT

2020 COMPLETED PROJECTS
Poudre Heritage Gateway
The sculpture, titled Heritage Gateway (left), was recently installed at the Poudre River Whitewater
Park along the Poudre Trail across from Whitewater—the wave shelter located on the south bank of the
river. Both works were created by Art in Public Places (APP) artist John Davis.
Thanks to support provided by the Poudre Heritage Alliance, Downtown Development Authority and
other community donors, visitors to the park can now learn about the history and importance of the
Cache la Poudre River, and its long-lasting impacts on agriculture, industry and recreation in Fort
Collins.
Butterfly Bouquet, Phase II
Butterfly Bouquet by Joseph McGrane is a decorative sculpture located at the new entrance to the
Butterfly Pavilion and Gardens on Spring Creek completed last year. Joe McGrane also created five
complementary concrete benches (right) installed this summer. The benches are triangular pillows of
native wildflowers. They are precast concrete with tile mosaic inlays and are placed near the visitors ’
center inside the Gardens.

28 PROJECTS IN PROGRESS
APP projects are funded by City capital construction projects and are tied to the project
construction timeline. Artists are selected through an open call process or from a pre-approved list of
artists. Qualifications are reviewed by the APP Board, a City Purchasing representative, and
representatives of the project team. The group selects artists to become part of the project team to
develop concepts for the artwork based on the goals of the project and input from the team. APP is
working with local artists to paint 50 murals this season.

28 Transformer Cabinet Murals
In partnership with Fort Collins Utilities Light and Power, APP is commissioning 23 Fort Collins artists to
transform 28 Fort Collins electrical transformer cabinets into works of art. So far this year, we have 1
additional mural that is sponsored by members of the community and more inquiries.
This program, now in its fifteenth year, is a graffiti mitigation program and saves tens of thousands of
dollars a year in mitigation costs. The program also enhances our community creating a buzz of interest
about Fort Collins locally, regionally, and nationally. The Transformer Mural Cabinet program has
completed 320 unique murals to date. Learn more at fcgov.com/cabinets.
15 Granite Pedestrian Sidewalk Pavers
In 2020, we will be producing fifteen pedestrian pavers to be installed in City sidewalks. Drawings
are solicited early in the year from local children ages 3–18. Selected drawings are
sandblasted into 16" square granite pavers. This project started in 2002 with the City ’s Engineering
and Streets Departments. We have produced 243 youth pavers to date. See images and locations of
all the pavers at fcgov.com/pavers.

COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES & OUTREACH
The APP program forges partnerships and provide a range of public engagement opportunities. The program
partners with the community and local businesses to expand the presence of art in Fort Collins.
13 Pianos About Town Murals
• Working pianos are placed around town for the
community to discover and play, adding color and
spontaneous musical happenings to Fort Collins.
• Tenth year of a collaborative project of Bohemian
Foundation, Downtown Development Authority and
APP.
• Eleven artists will paint murals on pianos downtown and
at Foothills Mall through early October and two will
paint in inside locations over the winter. Six of the
thirteen artists are new to the program this season.
• 120 pianos have been painted as part of the
program so far, with another thirteen to be painted this
year.
• Learn more at fcgov.com/pianos
• APP and the Engineering Department—in
collaboration with the Downtown Fort Collins
Creative District and the Jason and Lucy Greer
Foundation for the Arts—hired local artists to
paint temporary murals on the concrete barriers
around outdoor dining areas throughout
downtown. Murals were funded by a donor.
• The APP website has information and images of
projects, downloadable maps and walking tours.
The public can sign up for APP updates and artist
opportunities.
• APP staff worked to improve access to our
collection by adding six new online public art
tours.
• Staff continues to advise cities/programs on our
public art program as well as Transformer
Cabinet Mural and Pianos About Town
Programs. Cities include: Pilot Mountain, North
Carolina
• APP staff hosted two successful Open Houses to
engage new artists in January. We promoted our
Pianos About Town and other opportunities to
the artist community.
• Staff continues to promote project information
to the community prior, during, and after
installation of new artwork.
• Every year the Art in Public Places Program
coordinates projects that engage our
community. These projects include Pianos About
Town murals painted by community groups,
sponsored cabinet murals, and granite pavers
sandblasted with youth drawings.
• Staff gave an APP presentation to Leadership
Northern Colorado.
