Re: West Nile virus (WNV) Update
Summary:
WNV activity continues to amplify in the SE quadrant and now exceeds the Larimer County
Department of Health and Environment’s (LCDHE) informal threshold of 0.5 at the quadrant level
(east of College Ave. and south of Drake Rd.). Although the data does not cross the City’s
threshold of 0.75, given that weather conditions are not forecast to change favorably in the
coming week, next week’s data is likely to cross the City’s adult mosquito application threshold.
Testing will continue for another two weeks.
Current Vector Index:
Week No: 34 Vector Index

Current Vector
Index:
FC – Zone NW NA 0.00 0.03
FC – Zone NE NA 0.04 0.00
FC – Zone SE NA 0.29 0.51
FC – Zone SW NA 0.11 0.11
FC – Citywide NA 0.16 0.19
Floating Zone 0.75 0.53 0.66
Current Conditions: WNV is very active in the SE quadrant, however the distribution of the
positive traps is widespread and therefore the highest floating zone of 5 or more traps is 0.657.
In not providing a recommendation to treat adult mosquitoes based on this week’s data, the LCDHE is
recognizing the City’s deliberative process in establishing the policy of a minimum 0.75 vector index for
a floating, 5-trap minimum zone. As City staff have discussed the possibility of a spray recommendation
with County staff, it is not likely that COVID-19 impacts or wildfire-related smoke impacts will factor into

a decision on recommending an application. Staff is working with the Environmental Services
Department to leverage messaging and notification resources related to air quality in the event of an
adult mosquito application.
Process for Spray Recommendations: If the vector index exceeds 0.75, the LCDHE typically makes a
treatment recommendation to the City; areas of concern will be identified based on data from a
minimum of five traps. Identified treatment areas may be sub-zone or may cross zone boundaries.
Outreach and Public Awareness:
Door hangers have been distributed to a core area of high WNV activity identified prior to this week’s
dataset. This area will be expanded to include a 5 square mile area of highest activity. Digital, print and
radio advertising; street banners; bus bench ads; and social media content are currently running and
will continue through the rest of August. Outreach materials and messaging are shared in both English
and Spanish.
Outreach information is centered on “4Ds” messaging, which encourages people to Drain standing
water, Dress in long pants and sleeves to deter biting, Defend with EPA-approved repellant, and avoid
the high mosquito activity time between Dusk & Dawn. Please see example below.
