Every council member should read this article and give it some very serious thought in these days of the blatant racism and overuse of power by many of our nation's police departments. The program that Eugene, Oregon has put in place seems to me to show a pathway to a better way of handling interactions with homeless people and those experiencing a crisis, whether it be mental or otherwise. Police presence in these situations often leads to confrontation and use of excessive force, something the CAHOOTS program avoids.
