RE: 2020 Police Services Budget
Pursuant to the discussion at the Tuesday, June 16 Council meeting, the 2020 Police Services
budget amounts to $48,538,472 as originally adopted by the Council.
This $48.5 million budget includes core enforcement services in addition to community
investment services. Further, there are investments in both public safety and community services
within the Neighborhood Services, Parks and Natural Areas, and Social Sustainability
departments that could potentially meet one or both definitions.
At its Tuesday, June 23 adjourned meeting, the Council will consider a Resolution that would
establish an ad-hoc Community Impact Committee to develop and consider policy, funding, and
programming recommendations ensuring a safe and equitable community for all. Staff
recommends that the early discussion items for this Committee include a clear definition of the
functions that make up community investment services vs. enforcement services. The Budgeting
for Outcomes framework will ensure an efficient use of the Committee’s time in reaching these
decisions.
