BACKGROUND Prior to COVID-19, Fort Collins, and the northern Colorado region, has experienced low unemployment at around 2.5 – 3.0%. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, an estimated 24,600 initial claimants from Larimer County have filed for unemployment insurance (UI) from March 15, 2020 – May 23, 2020. Larimer County’s average weekly initial claims in 2019 was 102. In Fort Collins, we understand that our residents and where they work are not in isolation as northern Colorado commuting patterns show that our residents and workforce come from a 5-county region, but mainly within Larimer/Weld County. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION It is important to realize that recovery will not be static and will not occur on a specific date. We also recognize that that the pandemic is having a disproportionate impact on people of color and women. It is not simply a return to old ways of doing business and going back to “normal.” Normal was not good for everyone within our community. Attached is demographic information on UI claims. The work of Talent 2.0, women- and minority-owned business outreach, Cluster 3.0 were developed to create a foundation to this regional approach. The development of the Fort Collins Recovery Plan will be a multi-phased plan that works for the betterment of all in our community.
