Re: Summer Childcare Opportunities through Recreation Programming
Bottom Line
The City’s Recreation Department will provide programming for children via its Camp FunQuest program. The decision to
proceed is based on the community’s pressing need for childcare as parents transition back to work. Strict health
protocols will be implemented and have been subject to a rigorous internal and external review. The Camp will provide
daily programming for 120 children, ages 5-16. The Camp is scheduled to begin June 1, although the start day may be
delayed due to various circumstances. Multiple partners are involved, including Poudre School District, and the City’s
Human Resources and Sustainability Departments.
Background
It is the goal of the City to support our community’s families with a safe and enjoyable environment for all campers and to
create an atmosphere that supports personal enrichment through the Camp FunQuest program.
Camp FunQuest is scheduled June 1 through August 14. Current enrollments total over 900 full-time weekly spots with
23% funded through the Recreation Department’s Reduced Fee Program. The following partnerships have been created
to ensure missions are achieved, both internally and community-wide:
Poudre School District (PSD): With Northside Aztlan Community Center (NACC) designated as a shelter for
those experiencing homelessness, Camp FunQuest will operate out of Riffenburgh Elementary School from June
1 through July 17. Colorado Office of Early Childhood (state childcare licensing) and State and County Health
Departments have approved this transfer to ensure all regulations and COVID-19 guidelines are followed.
Social Sustainability Department: With PSD programs cancelled for summer, $20,000 in funds have been
reallocated to support enrollments in Camp FunQuest. Over the course of 12-weeks, City camp programs will
prioritize up to 240 weekly enrollments to students enrolled in Title I schools.
Human Resource Department: In an effort to also serve City essential staff, up to $20,000 in grant funds
received from Broadcom will be set aside to prioritize spots for City employees who serve in an essential role to
obtain full-time care for their school-age children.
Communication to enrolled families will begin this Friday, May 15 with a weekly “Fun Line” Newsletter to communicate
modifications to camp and additional at-home activities for families to engage in outside of camp time.
The Camp is projected to operate in the black including all hard and soft costs. Part-time staff will be recalled from
furloughed status to maintain small group sizes of 10 children per group. Additional support from full-time staff, including
critical Adaptive Recreation staff for one-on-one support for campers with special needs will be available.
