RE: Face Covering Educational Efforts
Request:
During the May 12 adjourned meeting, City Council requested information about how the face
covering order is being communicated to the public.
Background:
Since the face covering order was first enacted on May 1, 2020 education-based compliance
efforts have focused on informing the public about the importance of using a face covering as
one piece of a larger strategy to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community.
Overall Science-based Messaging:
The order follows guidance from local and federal health officials that face coverings can help
reduce the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19 to others in conjunction with:
following State and County Safer-At-Home guidelines,
observing physical distance rules, and
washing hands frequently and thoroughly.
Face coverings are important because the primary transmission of COVID-19 is now known to
be by respiratory droplets, and the transmission largely occurs in the first seven days after
infection, when people often do not show signs of being sick.
Consistent information containing these details has been communicated through social media,
City Manager newsletters, on free signage available for businesses, in the Coloradoan, and is
regularly updated online at: https://www.fcgov.com/eps/coronavirus-facecoverings
Continuing Communication Plan:
Leverage CDC messaging for social media and newsletter education focusing on the
“why” in context of how it applies in Fort Collins.
Engage local businesses and partners to share photos and stories about why they wear
face coverings and share via #ForFortCollins and #ForFoCo campaigns.
Collaborate with Larimer County to align messaging (similar to West Nile Virus strategy).
