RE: Cancellation of May 16
th
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event
The intent of this memorandum is to advise you that the Executive Leadership Team has
approved a recommendation from staff to cancel the upcoming Household Hazardous Waste
(HHW) Collection Event. Given the timeline, complex logistics, and pro-active communication
requirements for this event, coupled with recent guidance from the Center for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) on mass gatherings, the following are considerations in deciding to cancel
the May 16
th
event:
Staff limitations: Unknown availability of staff, both for the contractor that manages the
materials collected and City of Fort Collins employees who unload vehicles and staff the
event;
Timeline: The contractor’s timeline to cancel their services is May 1 and City’s
communication and outreach staff will likewise require enough time to communicate the
cancellation.
Recognizing that increased participation in the September HHW Collection Event is likely, event
planning coordinators are preparing now to ensure adequate staffing is scheduled and timely
communication is developed, including details on alternative disposal/recycling options, such as
the City’s Timberline Recycling Center.
