RE: 2019 Open Streets Events
The purpose of this memo is to provide an overview of FC Moves’ Open Streets
initiative and information regarding Open Streets events planned for 2019.
Background:
Open Streets is an international initiative which has been coordinated locally by FC
Moves since 2014. Open Streets are events that temporarily close public streets to cars
to provide a car-free space for people to walk, bike and participate in a variety of free,
family-friendly activities.
Since 2015, FC Moves has hosted two Open Streets events annually, which have
grown in average estimated participation to nearly 9,000 per event. Event routes
average one to two miles in length and have been hosted in every Council District
throughout Fort Collins.
Fort Collins’ Open Streets events emphasize health, wellness and active transportation,
and include educational, cultural, and artistic activities as well. Routes are selected
along walkable and bikeable corridors that connect key neighborhood amenities, such
as schools, churches, and parks. During an Open Streets event, participants can
engage in free activities provided by local businesses and organizations, while enjoying
live music and food trucks along the route. Open Streets events include plenty of open
space to allow for organic activities, bicycling, walking, playing, and more.

2019 Open Streets Events
Two Open Streets events are planned for 2019. The first event is scheduled for June
16, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., along Maple St. from Clover Ln. to N. Sherwood St., and N.
Sherwood St. to Lee Martinez Park (Attachment 1). This event will highlight the Maple
Bikeway, parks, schools and local neighborhoods. Staff and community stakeholders
are planning the details for the second Open Streets event, which is currently planned
for September 29.
In addition to live music and food trucks, more than 50 local partners are expected to
participate in the June Open Streets event offering a variety of free activities for
participants. City programs and departments also play a key role in Open Streets
events, including Transfort, Utilities, Parks, Connexion, and others.
While most of the Open Streets event route will be closed to through traffic by motor
vehicle, residents will be provided access to their homes throughout the day by
volunteer escort. Major intersections will remain open to through traffic, specifically N.
Shields St.
Historically, staff have met with Councilmembers whose Districts are included in the
event route in order to highlight logistical and outreach methods. Staff welcome
meetings with additional Councilmembers interested in learning more about Open
Streets events.
----
Several Councilmembers have hosted Listening Sessions during previous Open Streets
events; FC Moves extends this invitation to all Councilmembers for 2019 events.
For more information or to set up a listening session during the Open Streets event,
