83 Dynamic. Innovative. Responsive to the needs of the community. Creative. Community-
oriented. A candidate willing to promote transparency
1. Please describe the characteristics/attributes you want in an appointed City
Councilmember:
1
84 a good listener before taking action
85 I am looking for a City Councilmember is who driven by the needs of Fort Collins. I am
interested in someone who is willing to listen to the needs of our district and support the
development of a community with an emphasis on inclusion of all people, natural areas,
and local businesses.
86 bipartisanship honesty integrity
87 thoughtful, appreciation for business, willing to hear issues
88 Balance. Open mind. Ability to think for themselves. Willingness and ability to do the
homework.
89 Fair Balanced Listens to all sides Centered politically
90 Given the timeframe I like the idea of an interim that won't run in the election so the
voters can decide without undue influence.
91 Business-Friendly, logical, thoughtful without a no-growth or "smart growth" agenda
92 Someone who reflects the population of the area, and someone is who diverse. I feel
someone who is not afraid of conversation with people they do not agree with is vital.
They are wiling to hear both sides of issues. Instead of someone who shuts down any
talk or ideas that do not align with their agenda.
93 Pro-growth but with environmental responsible.. Pro-business to bring high paying jobs
to the area. Sensible and balanced. Fiscally responsible but understands that investing
back into the community is worth it.
95 Integrity Ability to listen Respect for all views Recognition of the human in all community
members Passion/Persistence
96 I want somebody that cares about everyone in our community regardless of socio-
economic status. I want somebody that is passionate about affordable housing in Fort
Collins, increased economic development, and someone that will continue to drive
forward Fort Collin's commitment to use 100% renewable sources of energy. I want my
City Councilmember to continue to foster an inclusive community for people of all sexual
orientations/identities, races, genders, and socio-economic status.
97 Two things: we need diversity on city council. I understand that we are a largely
homogeneous region, but the lack of diversity is embarrassing. And second, someone
who understands the intersection of business and citizenship. A desirable place to live is
great, but we also need a strong, vibrant economy if we are going to truly succeed.
98 Knowledge of Fort Collins cultural and economic past, present and future, awareness of
individuals' and businesses' needs in the community, a sense of fairness, a desire to
serve, an interest in research, ability to cooperate and respect others.

99 Experience without agenda
100 Forward thinking, willing to tackle the tough issues in the northeast part of the city. This
would include things like the Lemay/Vine and Timberline/Vine intersections.
101 Balanced perspective, truly listens to issue at hand vs. a pre-determined political
agenda. Serves the best interest of all citizens of Fort Collins vs. special interest bias.
102 Honest, compassionate, hard-working, good listener

what's right, even if it puts them in the minority. Ability to think creatively about solving
problems. Having a positive mindset about considering new options. Able to work
constructively with people with whom he or she might disagree.
109 Someone who is pragmatic, listens to recommendations from staff that are supported by
data. Questions assumptions but not character. For example, there are many residents
that don't support spraying for mosquitoes. A member of city council should be able to
rise above unfounded fear of chemicals and make decisions that are for the benefit of
overall public health.
110 1. Inclusivity: a curiosity about many points of view and the ability to welcome, respect
and incorporate those different perspectives into decision-making and leadership style.

Fort Collins and the natural resources of the area.

when faced with voting on oil and gas legislation.
120 Someone engaged in the community, concerned about representing the wide
demographic that inhabits District 1 and dedicated to strategic planning as we move
forward. This is not the time for no growth representatives, but for representatives who
have a realistic view of where Fort Collins is headed and the skills to be sure that growth
is addressed in a way to maximize it's benefits and minimize it's deficits.
121 Dear Council Members, My name is Kristen Draper, and I am a Director on the Poudre
School Board of Education. I have worked with Susan Gutowsky for over a year in this
capacity. In that time, she has shown herself to be a true leader. She is kind and caring,

the board through setting agendas, meeting with the community and providing
guidance. She is able to express her opinions thoughtfully and articulately, as well as
able to disagree passionately and politely. She is forward thinking, and applies the best

75 I've worked with Joe Somodi on La Familia's annual fundraiser this past spring and I've
seen Joe's hard work, willingness to go the extra mile and dedication to a cause
firsthand. Joe gets things done. On top of everything else he did to make the event a
success he also created a gorgeous video presentation that La Familia can use in future
fundraising. Joe's involvement made a tremendously positive impact on the success of
this event. I believe Joe's leadership, small business experience, pragmatism and hard
work make Joe an ideal candidate for City Council.
76 The only candidate I know is Susan Gutoswsky. She has chaired the scholarship
committee for the Rotary Club of Fort Collins. Recipients attend CSU or Front Range.
Many years ago I chaired that committee for a few years; Susan's work is tops.
77 I have known and worked with Joe Somodi for over five years. He has appeared as a
guest on my podcast (my background is in finance and tax as a CPA). He has coached me
in life and career skills for most of the time I've known him. Joe has a strong work ethic
and concern for the challenges and needs of current generations and beyond. He is the
right voice for right now. I especially appreciate his views on downtown housing and
increasing density in Ft. Collins. He speaks plainly and honestly about his views and yet
listens carefully to the voices of all. He has been very successful as a small businessman.
Although not a native, Joe has made Colorado his home and is deeply connected to the
rich fabric of the Ft. Collins community. When Joe commits, he learns, leans in and
produces results.
78 Joseph Somodi lives in the part of the district with the most stress. Waterglen and
Trailhead are a small city of their own within Fort Collins, but we are cut off from bike
trails, transit, city utilities, and master plan design. We will also be the most impacted by
the decisions of council in the next 10 years. You need a representative from our
forgotten corner of the city not the part of the district safely tucked in Old Town. Joe is
the only candidate who will himself live with these impacts on real neighborhoods like
Waterglen, Trail Head, Storybook, and whatever Montava becomes.
80 Joe Somodi is the ideal choice to be your colleague on the Council. In my work with Joe,
I've learned that his contributions simply make things better. He is prepared, informed,
and offers thoughtful opinions. He actively listens and asks important questions, which
result in learning new perspectives and making informed decisions. He is an effective
leader and works collaboratively to make the best decisions for the organization he
serves. He is the colleague you want working with you on issues that impact District 1
and all of Fort Collins. Joe Somodi cares. He cares about making Fort Collins greater. He
cares about all our fellow citizens and making their lives better. He is the right choice
right now for City Council and Fort Collins.
2. The following nine candidates have applied for the position: E. John Clarke Jerry
Gavaldon Danielle Buttke Susan Gutowsky Jessica Hazlett Nathaniel Budd Joseph
Somodi III Christopher Staten Richard Cress Please provide your thoughts about
their strengths and/or perceived limitations:
7
81 I would like to see Joe Somodi in this role. I support all of his current projects that he
does in this community to build community. He rallys people together, shows a
community it's strengths and shows support and genuine care to to build lasting
relationships. I saw his foco speaks out start as just an idea. Then I saw what he could do
when he put his mind to it. I was completely blown away that he put on this event. It
errupted conversation in our community for months and months to follow. Not only did
he skillfully utilize the people in his community by reaching out to others to enliven their
communities, he put people into the roles they were best at, seeing everyones
individual skills and giving everyone a little spotlight. That is his skill. He can gather
people and inspire change very quickly and make each individual feel seen and connect
them to the bigger picture. What he has you want, it is contagious curiosity and wonder
combined with skill, dedication and action to make true change.
82 Joe Somodi is the perfect choice for City Council at this time. Joe's business experience
and his indepth knowledge and connection to the community will be huge assets to the
council. I've known Joe for 3 years and continue to be amazed at his commitment to
making a difference in big and small ways. He is thoughtful and conscious and I know he
will represent his diverse constituents well and with the future health of our community in
mind. I strongly support Joe for City Council.
83 Joe Smodi is my candidate of choice. He is a dedicated public servant and committed to
the community.
84 We are not in district 1 but feel that Joseph Somodi III would be an idea candidate for city
council member. He structured but opened minded, good listener and has jumped into
the community to be part of it
85 While I think that most of these candidates have their hearts in the right place, I have
notices that most of them have selfish objectives in running for our city council. I am
interested in a candidate who has all of our best interest in mind, and who is doing it for
the great good, not because they need a new job or best they have done it before.
86 N/A
87 Nathaniel Budd has made attainable housing a key issue for his volunteer work. That is a
skill and insight desperately needed on Council.
88 John Clarke as a place holder while the elections go on. I really like this idea. I don't
always agree with John but he certainly has the experience to jump right in and cover
while the election process takes place. No candidate would end up having an advantage
due to appointment.
89 With all of those choices, I would lean towards either John Clarke or Nate Budd. John is a
long time, active community member. Nate is new to the scene, but very thoughtful.
90 John Clarke - experienced politician that won't be running in April. Levels the playing
field for all of the other viable candidates.

92 I feel Joseph Somodi III is the right fit for this position. He is loves this city, has invested in
this city (with starting a great organization like FOCO Speaks out for instance), and most
importantly he is willing to have a conversation with those he disagrees with. I also
believe the fact he is not a native to colorado lends to even more prospective on
issues/ideas to the direction Fort Collins could/should go.
93 Nate Budd - Pro-business. Sensible and willing to compromise.
95 My name is Colleen Conway, I have been a member of the Fort Collins community for 48
years . I would like to recommend Joe Somodi to fill the vacancy left by Bob Overbeck.
Joe may not have been a Fort Collins community member for as long as some of the
other applicants but he immediately began to find ways to serve the community on his
arrival. He served on the HRC to support the community and City Council. He was the
driving force in producing a HRC Event "FoCo Speaks Out" and then continued
producing this as a community initiated event in 2018. I believe City Council needs to
respect the Fort Collins Community in District 1 who voted for Bob Overbeck based on
his platform for a vibrant , welcoming , safe for all community with respect for all views.
City Council should appoint someone with similar views and abilities that can represent
the community members in District 1 as they wished. thank you for allowing the
community to register their opinions
96 I have known Joseph Somodi III for three years as a neighbor and friend and he has the
qualities and experience to work with people from all types of backgrounds. Joe being a
minority himself understands the importance of creating and maintaining an inclusive
community for all people. Joe is a highly personable individual that can relate to so many
people. Joe's experience as a small-business owner will be a great source of expertise
as our city continues to develop.
97 John Clarke is too partisan. We need independent thinkers who are working for the
common good, not reflexive partisans. Jerry Gavaldon is very nice but lacks the proper
experience and skills. Danielle Buttke - I don't know this person at all. Susan Gutowsky -
see John Clarke above. Too partisan. Jessica Hazlett - I don't know Jessica at all
Nathaniel Budd - he seems like the ideal candidate. Dedicated to the community,
sophisticated, balanced and independent approach to the issues. The clear winner I
think. Joseph Somodi - I don't know him, but his service to the community is admirable
(La Familia) Christopher Staten - lacks depth Richard Cress - I don't know this newcomer
to our community, but his economic message seems positive
98 Jerry Gavaldon has a strong appreciation for the past and future of Fort Collins - he was
born and raised in Fort Collins and he has deep roots here; he truly loves Fort Collins
and he is committed to improving the quality of life of its citizens and the growth of
business here. Jerry has spent a lifetime building relationships with other people in the
community and supporting local businesses and services. He is fair minded, is willing to
listen intently to others, and open to compromise. He has the greatest integrity of any
person I know. Jerry is respectful, and unafraid to call attention to difficult issues that
deserve attention. He is happy to do needed research, he will back up his beliefs, and he
will give of his time.

99 With John's experience I feel he would be an excellent choice to fill the short term gap in
the council.
100 I am only familiar with some of the candidates. Of those listed, I have been very
impressed by Nathaniel Budd and his ability to understand the larger picture and find
creative ways to solve problems.
101 I'm impressed with Nate Budd, appreciate his diverse background, thoughtful approach
and interest in community service.
102 I highly recommend Joseph Somodi III. I have known him to care deeply about those
around him and the city of Fort Collins. He is a passionate man that exhibits high integrity
and character and will work hard for all the people in this community. He is a leader and a
listener that will get the work done.
105 Joseph Somodi III, I believeis the right voice for right now. His 20 years of small business
centemake him the best choice. I know him to be thorough and pragmatic in his decision
making and that Joe is deeply connected to the diverse and rich fabric of our community.
106 Hi, I'm Ruth Beauchamp, I've lived in Fort Collins for five years and I've known Joe since
he moved to this great city. Our lives have intersected around our shared interests in
health and wellness and positive growth for individuals and for all of Fort Collins. I
believe he is the best appointment selection for City Council because he is deeply
connected to our diverse and growing community. I know this because he has inspired
many different kinds of people to come together and share their perspectives,
challenges and resilience through his Foco Speaks Out. He has a genuine interest in
others - their individual stories - what they care about - their hopes and dreams AND
brings that curiosity and care into each and every of his relationships. Somodi has natural
abilities to bring people together. He listens thoughtfully to all perspectives and asks
important questions to find common ground that solutions are built upon. He is an ideal
pick for City Council because he represents healthy and sustainable growth for our city
AND because he can speak for many demographics of our growing community.
108 Susan Gutowsky has years of experience serving on the PSD Board of Education, which
has many similarities to being on City Council. She has been accessible and open to
listening to people's positions on various issues. Jerry Gavaldon is currently an HOA
board president. He seems to like to be in charge, but doesn't necessarily listen to other
people's opinions in a substantive way. John Clarke has demonstrated some very right-
wing positions in the past.
109 John Clarke would be my choice because of his past experience in office. It wouldn't give
anyone a leg up in the election because he isn't running.

110 I believe Joe Somodi is the right voice for Fort Collins City Council today. I met Joe two
years ago through our common interest in equity and inclusion. Since then, I have seen
him invest in the betterment of our community in ways that few of us do. Joe is the
creator and producer of the program "FoCo Speaks Out!" which provides a platform for
local citizens to share stories that paint a reality of local inequities and inequalities, while
inspiring hope. Joe's insightfulness and creativity helped us to communicate and learn
about what is usually a challenging and complicated topic, in an optimistic and impactful
way. As one participant said, "This thought-provoking and inspiring event made me want
to make this community even greater than it already is." I admire Joe's ability to often
step up to the plate to bring his respectful, thorough and pragmatic style of leadership as
he does on the Board of Directors of The Family Center/La Familia. The board can
always count on Joe's A communication skills, to listen to all points of view, ask amazing
questions, bring clarity to complicated issues, while staying open to learning along the
way. Joe's impact in the community has already been felt; his interest in the betterment
of our community is clear. I know that our City Council will benefit from his demonstrated
leadership success. Joe is the ideal pick for City Council today!
111 I can only speak to the individual I know. I have know Joe Somodi for 2 years and I
believe that he will be a strong addition to city council.
112 Jessica is a great choice
113 My name is Barb Kistler and I'm writing to support Joe Somodi to replace Bob Overbeck
on City Council. I've known Joe for several years and have worked with him on several
projects, so know him quite well. Joe is an outstanding candidate for a number of
reasons, which I'll briefly outline here. Joe embodies a positive, passionate, mindful
approach to everything he does. He cares deeply about the Fort Collins community, and
possesses a strong desire to make Fort Collins an even better place for all residents –
he knows it's already a great place! He listens intently and openly to all ideas, he seeks
input from many different voices before decision-making and action, he has the courage
to make tough decisions, and he has the passion to give 150% to any endeavor he
undertakes. Joe cares deeply about creating a community that serves all residents, and
his care is genuine! He has poured his heart and soul into getting to know his community
– the people, issues, concerns, passions, hopes and fears. His desire to serve, and to
give back to our community is what fuels his interest in joining City Council. He will make
a fine addition to the Council should he be selected.
114 I strongly endorse Jessica Hazlett's candidacy for City Council in my district. I've
witnessed her strong work ethic and willingness to listen and have discourse, while
allowing for the possibility of compromise. She is in a unique position to engage the
energies of the younger generation in local politics which would serve to strengthen and
enliven our community even further! .................. Danielle Buttke, unfortunately, did not
follow directions on her application. Not a propitious start. ....................... Of all the
candidates above, I see Jessica Hazlett as being the most capable of working with
others.
115 I would like to see Joseph Somodi III elected to the council
118 Jessica would be a breath of fresh air. She tells it like it is and is not afraid of a challenge.

119 Nate Budd ran for this seat in the recent past and did quite well. Despite the fact that he
was supported by the Chamber of Commerce and Board of Realtors, I think we should
give him a chance and see if he, as he claims, does not bow to special interest groups.
120 Nathaniel Budd understands the economic challenges of today and the future. He is
actively involved in the community and thoughtful about how to move forward. I believe
he is demonstrably the best candidate.
121 Susan Gutowsky is an excellent choice for City Council. Her 8 years of experience on
the Poudre School Board of Education means she will be able to hit the ground running.
She understands the nature of board work; that collaboration does not necessarily
require consensus. She has lived in District 1 of Fort Collins for 40 years, knows the
changes the city has undergone and is continuing to go through, and wants people of all
walks of life to be able to thrive here in this amazing place.
122 I can only speak to Joe Somodi's strengths and limitations. His strengths are definitely his
ability to remain calm, his excellent listening skills and his ability to see things from many
angles. He is truthful, full of integrity and authentic. I honestly don't know of what his
limitations might be other than the fact that he has not worked in politics before but that
could be a plus?!

126 To the Fort Collins City Council, I am writing this letter in support of appointing Joe
Somodi III to the vacant spot as the District One City Councilmen. I have know Joe for
over two years and in that time, I have found him to be an extraordinary neighbor, friend,
and listener. As I read through each of the nine candidates reasons for wanting to serve
as my district as city councilman, I found Joe's statement to be the most selfless and
inclusive. I also believe that his current involvement in the community and his experience
as a small business owner have aptly prepared him for this appointment. I first came to
Fort Collins in the fall of 2010 as a student at Colorado State University. One of the
reasons I chose CSU was because of the amazing community that surrounds it. Once I
graduated, my husband and I choose to establish this city as our home and I am proud to
say, that I am now a homeowner with a Fort Collins address, a manager at a local
business, and a volunteer. As a homeowner in Fort Collins, I think that Joe's initiatives for
inclusive housing and thoughtful development projects is an important issue for district
one. As one of the largest and still-developing districts in Fort Collins, the issue of public
spaces, local businesses, and affordable housing is going to continue to be an ongoing
conversation. I believe that Joe is committed to an "and" approach when it comes to
these topics. Conservation, a healthy economy, and a thriving and inclusive community
have continued to make Fort Collins special, and I truly believe that Joe is the candidate
who will work to incorporate the undeveloped areas of district one into stunning
examples of the existing Fort Collins community. As I mentioned above, I also work at a
locally owned and operated business. One of the most unique aspects of working in Fort
Collins is the opportunity to pursue an entrepreneurial dream. I have seen this as both a
College of Business graduate and in my current position. When I think of the
collaboration of city, business, and university, Fort Collins really has incorporated the use
of cutting edge research from CSU and forward thinking business strategies to establish
a thriving economy where I am able to work, learn, and play. Joe is one of the wisest
people I know. He is forward thinking and fiscally responsible. As a city councilman, Joe is
the candidate who will be willing to marry these two areas. We have been forward
thinking in Fort Collins, and we need to continue this. Finally, a very important initiative
for my family is public safety. I have personally taken two citizens academies in Northern
Colorado, and my husband is employed by the Larimer County Sheriff's Office. I have
found Fort Collins Police Services to be a very respectable and community oriented
department. I believe that the city councilman should be protecting the rights of all those
who live and serve in Fort Collins. In the few conversations I have had with Joe about his
objectives toward the local police, I find him to be fair minded. I believe that he will stand
up for a fair process when questionable actions are taken by a law enforcement agency.
I have personally met Bob Overbeck on two occasions, and he was truly an amazing city
councilman. I think that Joe is a candidate who will serve our community in a way that
resembles Bob's commitment, kindness, and selflessness. I do not know Joe as someone
to get bogged down by political affiliation or discrimination of any kind. I think that if you
appoint Joe as city councilman, you will find a public serviceman who always has his door
open, stands up for the Fort Collins community as a whole, and collaborates with those in
all areas who have worked so hard to build such a vibrant community. Thank you so
much for you time, Amanda Hitpas
127 I have been impressed with Susan Gutowsky's responsiveness while on the school
board. My perception of Nate Budd is that he is more focused on businesses than
people and would not be a good candidate.

129 When I heard Joseph Somodi was running for this position, my immediate thought was
"finally". Finally there will be someone involved that is not afraid to tackle sensitive
issues, but will acknowledge and work on things head on. Joe had an amazing way of
seeing beauty and the positive in people, to help leverage their strengths to make them
and the environment around them, well, better. I know that Joe is focused on creating a
welcoming and equitable Fort Collins for all and I cannot wait to see what he does as city
Councilmember for district one.
130 Richard Cress started up a publishing business over 30 years ago, He has successfully
owned and directed his business over the years thru thick and thin to a point where he
could sell his business interest and retired last year, He now wishes to give back to his
adapted community of Fort Collins. I believe he wishes to utilizing his developed skills
and successful management attributes to support the duties and requirement to help run
the City of Fort Collins. I highly recommend Richard Cress to fill District 1 Council
member seat. Regards, Bill & Donna Ibanez 2814 Catamaran Cove Fort Collins CO

131 Joe Somodi is a strong leader with a clear vision for Fort Collins' future. He listens
broadly to opinions and will represent his constituents fairly, but he will--in all cases--
maintain an independence based on deeply-held feelings of fairness, compassion, etc.
Joe would make an excellent member of City Council.
133 I know Joe to be a responsible, careful, sensitive person.
134 Joseph Somodi III is a most remarkable individual. I have had the sincere pleasure and
honor of knowing him since 2011. Joe has served as a colleague of mine in the health
and wellness profession and I can always rely on him for outstanding results. His
communication and insight with clients is exceptional. Because of his keen listening skills
and unique and diverse background, Joe is able to connect to people of all
demographics, and inspire positive growth. I have seen and participated in his Facebook
live sessions and his ability to speak to his audience, lead, and transform the energy in a
room is bar none. He is a gift unlike none other. I have seen firsthand how Joe impacts
people's lives, and he does it by inspiring them to be the absolute best version of
themselves. Joe's two decades of experience as a small business owner also help make
him the best choice for City Councilmember, as he understands the financial and social
responsibilities to evolve the Fort Collins community in meeting and exceeding its goals.
Joe cares first and foremost about the physical, emotional, and financial health of the Fort
Collins Community. Joe is savvy, compassionate, wise, and pragmatic. He is absolutely an
exceptional candidate and the right choice. Fort Collins is lucky to have him!!!
135 I've know Susan Gutowsky as a fellow Riotarian, for several years. I've served on the
scholarship committee with her and know how dedicated to the school system she is. I
also know that she loves Fort Collins, is a hard worker and strives to do her best for
those she serves. She is a good listener, works well with others and wants to serve. I
think Susan would make a really good council member.

137 Joseph Somodi III is a new member to our community. He has done minimum work on
our community, with no experience or shown interest in policy work, budgets etc His
qualifications As a yoga instructor are not insufficient. He does not have the needed
skills, or shown track record of community work in Fort Collins to do a good job as a City
Council member.
138 I believe that Nate Budd will serve District 1 with integrity, an open mind, an ear to all
sides of issues, and make decisions on the basis of facts and not a predisposed
disposition.
139 I have never heard of any of them or met them. If these particular female candidates are
highly qualified, we should have more females in government.
140 Joseph Somodi III has all the qualities I'm looking for. Please note I am a small business
owner operating a retail store in oldtown.
141 John Clarke is the most qualified candidate to fill this position until a vote can be taken.
As a former County Commissioner he knows FC and the challenges facing us.
142 John Clarke is the ideal candidate for this role. He cares deeply for the city, and is a long
term resident. He is well versed in all of the issues faced by the city, and is a man of
integrity, that will help march towards solutions.
143 I believe that Joe Somodi has the demeanor to work with anyone, regardless of class,
race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. but more importantly, i think he values an inclusive
community in which all all welcome and vigorously encouraged to participate fully in all
the services and cultural opportunities that Fort Collins can offer. He demonstrated this
when he served on the Human rights commission and when he took that service to a
higher level in creating two events,
144 Jessica Hazlett very strong candidate
145 I believe Jessica Hazlett has the heart to be a great candidate for this position. She is a
hard worker and is she will fight for what she believes in.

are welcome and are vigorously encouraged to participate fully in all the services and

on the Human Relations Commission, and when he took that service to a higher level in
conceptualizing and producing two events called FoCo Speaks Out, which celebrated
Fort Collins' rich diversity in a way that uplifted and helped us all see our common
humanity. Joe Somodi has been running his health business for a decade, which requires
attention to financial detail as well as a commitment to health as a high priority, and, it
demands listening to client needs; and, he has a dozen years experience running a
boutique branding and video production company, which demonstrate his creative
approach to problem-solving –clearly evident from the unique success of FoCo Speaks
Out. His commitment to health and diverse populations includes attainable housing for
all, and an overall healthy and sustainable environment for all of Fort Collins residents. I
believe that Joe Somodi offers exactly what Fort Collins needs and would be an
excellent choice for City Council.

147 The candidates generally fall into two categories: longtime residents who have built up
deep personal knowledge of the City, the majority of whom have deep knowledge of a
particular issue, and newer residents who have moved to Fort Collins from elsewhere
who have broader expertise and interest in issues of Citywide concern. Joseph Somodi
III: - Mr. Somodi's focus on Health as his main issue would connect with issues of concern
to District 1 communities like no other I heard proposed on Jan 2. I have already
mentioned the importance of the Climate Action Plan, the success of which will be
integral to the health of every single citizen. Somodi's prioritization of health and
wellness also connects with Fort Collins residents' love of outdoor recreation. His
candidacy also intersects with the greatly increased focus on diversity and LGBTQ issues
at the state level, both in the governorship and in our State representatives. On a
personal level, Somodi is the only candidate who has taken an interest in our arts and
culture sector, which can only grow in civic importance once the FoCo Creates Cultural
Master Plan is adopted in April. In terms of limitations, Somodi may only have lived in
Fort Collins for a limited time, however the energy and poise that he has brought to
projects such as FoCo Speaks Out demonstrates how a new perspective can refresh and
enliven our civic discourse - so I would see this limitation as a strength. Mr. Somodi
would get my vote. Danielle Buttke - Ms. Buttke's approach of putting her scientific
expertise in the service of City issues in a non-partisan way would be welcome. I found
her presentations and answers to the point and helpful. Her limitations would be in areas
where scientific methods would be of limited use - for example, in ensuring that the
implementation of Cultural Master Man gets the full support it needs in order to activate
the currently dormant potential of the arts and culture sector to contribute to a healthy
triple bottom line. Jerry Gavaldon - His deep roots in Fort Collins' Latinx community are a
definite strength, and much needed in the City if this community are to successfully
navigate the challenges of gentrification. However, given the extraordinary range of
activities and interests that have a home in District 1, I would suggest that Mr. Gavaldon
would best serve our community in a different, more focused role. Nathaniel Budd - I
was impressed by his commitment to and knowledge of the workings of local
government. Also, he would add much-needed diversity to the Council, as well as the
perspective of a millennial. However, his comments seemed very general, and I am
unclear how exactly he would engage with the specific needs of District 1 residents,
businesses and non-profits. Susan Gutowski - Deep knowledge of undergraduate
education. Not sure how much she would bring to other sectors. Jessica Hazlett - Good
to see a young person stepping up and providing representation for younger Fort
Collins residents. However, I think she needs to gain more grassroots experience
before taking on the responsibilities of a position on the Council. Richard Cress - Unclear
how his business experience would engage with specific issues in District 1. Christopher
Staten - Given the tight timeline and term limit of this appointment, I think his absence
would rule him out of contention. E. John Clarke - Clear strengths in his deep and broad
experience in local government. Limitations would be that he does not intend to run for a
full term, and it would seem to be a lost opportunity if a candidate committed to a full
term would be denied the opportunity for on-the-job experience.
148 I have worked with Joe Somodi III on numerous occasions and find him to be an
articulate, organized, caring person that is forward thinking and passionate about making
our city an even better place. His high level communication and interpersonal skills have
led to some amazing collaborations between local non-profits and local artists. I truly
believe he would be an excellent pick for our city council and endorse him fully.

150 Jessica Hazlett would be an asset to the council, with her high energy and positive
attitude. She will truly work for the citizens of Fort Collins and bring vision to the role.
151 I'm writing in support of Joseph Somodi III. I've known Joe for several years and have
worked with him on a number of community related issues. He is thoughtful, bright, and
brings a wealth of experience from a number of different cities. He is an inclusive leader
and seeks to listen to a diverse set of voices. He has been a successful small business
owner and he has the ability to motivate and lead diverse groups of people. I think he
would make an excellent appointee.
152 Jessica Hazlett was arrested and convicted of domestic violence several years ago. She
pled down to a lesser charge to avoid being charged with a felony. I don't think she
should be considered for this position.
153 I wanted to share my experiences with Susan Gutowsky over the past 8 years. We first
met in 2011 when I was active in the community keeping neighborhood schools open
and thriving. Susan proved a wise and motivated advocate for our communities and
schools. I then worked on two of her school board campaigns and found her to be very
honest, straightforward, and well-spoken. She considers issues from a big picture angle,
taking input from all sides and acting on it. She recognizes the value of growth to the
community but at the same time recognizes the value of keeping the small city feel of the
community in Fort Collins intact. She would make an excellent City Councilor. Sincerely,
Jonathan Runge, PhD

I am writing on behalf of Susan Gutowsky who is seeking to fill the City Council Seat for
District 1. I have admired for years the outstanding public servant Susan has been in our
community. In my role as a bilingual care coordinator, I have observed her dedication in
identifying the needs of the under –served, Spanish speaking community in PSD , mental
health issues in our school aged children and implementing realistic and positive
outcomes. She has an incredible gift of listening to issues and strives to collaboratively
work well with others toward a common goal. She is a person of the highest integrity and
dependability .What better person to put the boots on the ground, be a creative and
innovative thinker yet bring forth the ideas and thoughts of issues such as mental health,
working families, fiscal accountability, safety and to the city table. Our community is
growing at a fast pace and we are in need of steadfast visionaries like Susan to be a strong
advocate; a believer of strong leadership and passionate about linking people and
neighborhoods.

From: Carol Ann Hixon
I’m writing to suggest that Susan Gutowsky would be an excellent choice for the City
Council vacancy.
I first knew Susan when she was teaching junior high social studies more than 25 years
ago and our friendship and collaborations have spanned the years.
Here is why I think Susan would be a complement to the current Council and an
excellent representative for citizens:
Susan listens. As a teacher, she listened to her students as she guided their
learning. In our district staff meetings, she listened to colleagues and proposed
solutions incorporating many ideas. More recently, we have served together on the
Poudre School District(PSD) Foundation’s Excellence in Education Committee.
Susan chairs the committee, with grace, taking each members input and weaving
them together. We select the teacher of the year, the menu, the program, the
decorations without stress, due in part to Susan’s skill with melding our ideas to
create an evening of celebration.
Susan serves community with her entire being. As a teacher, she wasn’t just in the
classroom; she was a supporter of kids long after school hours. In retirement, she
has served on the PSD School Board and knows well what is necessary to be an
informed board member – pages and pages to be read, visits to schools and with
constituents, committee meetings, and more. Susan spends many hours with staff,
parents, and community members, inviting them to share their thoughts. This
research informs decisions the board make. Susan is active throughout the
community and always brings a smile and listening ear to each event.
Susan is an avid learner. If she doesn’t feel she has enough information to make a
decision, she researches. I attribute that to being a teacher and also a lifelong
learner.
Susan is a champion for all and a passionate advocate for diverse constituents. She
looks at broad community needs to weave a strong government, be it classroom,
committee, school board, or City Council.
Susan is a great colleague, one who knows how to work hard to get a job done and
to find time for laughter.
As I watched the interviews, I realized that you have an impressive roster to consider.
Susan Gutowsky has the experience, expertise, and personality for this position.
Thank you for your dedication to the community.

Dear City Council Members,
I have had the great pleasure of serving with Susan Gutowksy as a fellow school board
member for the past 7 years.
I believe she can take the skills she has developed working on the school board and serve the
City of Fort Collins well. These skills involve working well with others, being prepared for
meetings, taking time to attend events and activities associated with the role, meeting with
constituents and the ability to listen to all sides of an issue before making a decision.
Best of luck on your selection!

Cathy

Please distribute to council members for the endorsement of John Clarke prior to the January 15th
meeting. Thank you!
Dear Council Members,
I am asking for your support in choosing John Clarke for the District 1 temporary council seat until
the 2019 April election. Through my upbringing, I have watched my father’s involvement in our
community and his efforts to make it a thriving, safe, and desirable city to live. My father has been
an example to me and my four brothers of the importance to give back to others. He has never
hesitated to give his time or energy to serve in various volunteer or elected positions such as:
Fort Collins City Council Member;
Fort Collins Assistant Mayor;
Larimer County Commissioner
Founder Poudre Fire Authority Board of Directors
Fort Collins Planning and Zoning Board
With my own campaign management experience, I feel John Clarke is the best candidate to fill the
vacant council seat until the April election. I know the time commitment it will take for candidates to
be successful in the District 1 upcoming election. By selecting John Clarke, it will give other
candidates the time and opportunity to reach out to voters in District 1 between now and April. In
addition, utilizing his experience, John would be able to temporarily fill that position, so council
business would continue to run without disruption.
Please vote for John Clarke on January 15th
for the District 1 council seat.

Date: Thursday, January 10, 2019 10:56:51 AM
City Council Members,
I am pleased to endorse the candidacy of Susan Gutowsky for the vacancy created by the election of Bob Overbeck
as County Assessor. I know her work best from the four years we served together on the Poudre School District
Board of Education. If past performance is the best predictor of future performance, Susan will be an outstanding,
constructive, effective member of City Council.
Susan took a thoughtful, analytical and people-oriented approach to our work. As a board member she initially
analyzed PSD issues from the perspective of the people involved. Who was affected, in what way as that impact
positive or less than ideal, would this proposal improve the situation? Then she took up the operational aspects of
the issue. What was the increased cost (or savings)? How were students, teachers and others benefited? Was the
proposal the most effective way to remedy/improve the situation?
These approaches will accompany Susan Gutowsky to the work of City Council. Her goals will be the improvement
of government services and daily operations. She has no ideological axes to grind except the development and
maintenance of good government. She has the good judgement needed to evaluate proposals and the ability to
explain her conclusions amicably but effectively in public meetings or in one-on-one meetings with constituents.
Susan will be a thoughtful and positive addition to City Council.
Thank you for all you do.

It is my pleasure to recommend and advocate for Susan Gutowsky to be appointed for Bob Overbeck’s position on
our Fort Collins City Council. I have known Susan for many years and have watched her in leadership positions
passionately and tirelessly work for others in our diverse community. She has served on the Project Smile board to
provide dental and vision services for children who could not afford those services and to help children learn
preventive care. Likewise, she has served on the PSD Foundation board to raise money for grants and projects for all
of our schools. Susan does this and more as she also spends most of her time working as a PSD BOE member. She
spends time listening to and advocating for ALL PSD constituents. She has town listening sessions, visits all schools
throughout PSD and listens to parents from all zip codes. Susan makes sure she listens to every side. She is highly
respected by teachers, classified staff and administrators. She works as a team player with with the other BOE
members to make decisions for PSD. Susan will bring that same dedication and passion to City Council. I trust her
to do her homework and to listen to all sides as she makes decisions that will help Fort Collins to continue to grow
and be a safe, clean place to live and work. Susan walks her talk and puts in the time and effort to be an outstanding
leader. Thank you for your consideration of Susan Gutowsky for city council.

City Council Members,
Please accept this email recommendation as you consider filling the vacancy of the City Council seat
for District 1, left vacant by Bob Overbeck. Based on my interaction with Susan Gutowsky, I believe
she is the best person for this position.
Having been employed by Poudre School District for five years, working both as a Family Liaison and
a Spanish teacher for native Spanish-speakers at Fort Collins High School, I can attest to Susan’s
willingness to support and advocate for the students I work with. She has been the only Board of
Education member who has consistently shown interest in the program Caminos which is a unique
partnership between Colorado State University and Fort Collins High School’s Spanish Literacy
program which offers a pathway for FCHS Latino and bilingual high school students to make
meaningful connections with university staff and students. She has attended the celebratory event
at Colorado State University where Spanish literacy students present their semester’s work each
December and the annual Caminos Careers Luncheon at Fort Collins High School in the spring. I
believe she understands the unique needs of the underrepresented students in the district,
especially the Hispanic population in PSD, due, in part, to the fact that she is a non-Spanish speaking
person of Hispanic descent and feels a unique affinity for the warm, embracing culture that she grew
up in. Her background gives her a distinct perspective and helps her think creatively so that she can
create opportunities to support and encourage these students. I am sure she will continue this work
of advocacy for the City Council if she is selected for this position.
I have also had the opportunity to work with Susan closely as a board member of El Museo de las
Tres Colonias. Since joining the board in May 2017, I have collaborated with Susan as she and the
other board members work to resurrect “El Museo”. She is passionate about preserving its history
and creating a place that can be enjoyed by everyone in the community.
Because or her character, values, and professional and personal experiences, Susan Gutowsky would
be an ideal City Council member. Not only is Susan an intelligent and kindhearted individual, she is
passionate about celebrating the diversity that surrounds us. She values the differences that make
each one of us unique. She is compassionate and her positive attitude makes her a joy to work
with. Any organization would be lucky to have her knowledge, talent, and leadership to make it
stronger and more effective. She has the ability to work with a wide variety of constituents in diverse
demographics and across a wide range of zip codes.
My recommendation is without reservation. Please feel free to contact me if you have any
questions.

Dear Leadership of our (seriously) Great City,
I submitted the following thoughts in favor of Joe Somodi at the site so designated (for the
appointment to Council, District 1), but, I accidentally hit the submit button before completing
my form; I went back, and re-submitted a completed form. I don't know how you would know,
however, which of the forms that I sent was the correct one, so, here are my thoughts as taken
from the questions that you asked on the site. Thanks for this opportunity.
(Describe attributes that I want ...)
I want a calm, compassionate, detail-oriented person who listens well without interrupting,
who is comfortable with all kinds of people, and who has demonstrated leadership and some
capacity for initiating and completing endeavors that reflect his or her passion, and,
compassion for the diverse population that Fort Collins has and hopes to further attract.
(Strengths and / or limitations....)
I believe that Joe Somodi has the commitment to service, diverse community service
experience, and demeanor to work with anyone, regardless of class, race, gender, sexual
orientation, etc. but more importantly, I think he values an inclusive community in which all
are welcome and are vigorously encouraged to participate fully in all the services and cultural
opportunities that Fort Collins can offer. He demonstrated this when he served on the Human
Relations Commission, and when he took that service to a higher level in conceptualizing and
producing two events called FoCo Speaks Out, which celebrated Fort Collins' rich diversity in
a way that uplifted and helped us all see our common humanity. I left thinking that I am lucky
to live where someone initiates something like that, and, had City encouragement to do so.
Joe Somodi has been running his health business for a decade, which requires attention to
financial detail as well as a commitment to health as a high priority, and, it demands listening
to client needs. Previously, for a dozen years, he operated a boutique branding and video
production company, which demonstrates his business skills listed above, as well as his ability
for unique and creative approaches to problem-solving– clearly evident from the uniqueness
and success of FoCo Speaks Out.
His commitment to health and diverse populations includes attainable housing for all, and an
overall healthy and sustainable environment for all of Fort Collins residents.
After having gotten to know him through mutual friends and common interests (diversity
issues, La Familia, performance), I believe that Joe Somodi offers exactly what Fort Collins
needs and would be an excellent choice for City Council. Thanks for this opportunity.

Letter for Susan Gutowsky
City Council:
I have known Susan Gutowsky for many years, as the mother of two of my excellent students,
as a fellow teacher from another building, and finally with me on the staff of Lesher Middle
School. Since our retirement, Susan and I continue to work together in non-profits, her on the
PSD School Board and serving with me on the PSD Foundation Board. I know Susan well, and I
am impressed with her service to the community on the school board and now with her desire
to continue community service by serving on City Council.
Susan truly cares for the people of this community. She is chair of the PSD Foundation
Excellence in Education Award Committee, on which I also serve, to coordinate an evening to
honor and celebrate PSD teachers for their outstanding service to the community. In that
position, she assumes leadership responsibility and works well on our team giving and receiving
feedback from all of us and keeping everyone working on the goal at hand.
Working with constituents in diverse demographics across the City of Fort Collins will come
naturally to Susan who has years of experience as a teacher working with diverse families. She
will make it a priority for City Council, as she did on the PSD Board of Education, to advocate for
the disadvantaged in our community who are struggling to survive.
Service is a passion for Susan Gutowsky. My friend will service City Council with
professionalism and integrity, as well as a sound work ethic. She is an exemplary team player,
who will represent so well the city she loves.
Sincerely,
Marty Marsh

Dear Mayor Troxell and Distinguished Members of the Fort Collins City Council,
Happy New Year, and I hope this note finds you well.
This is Dr. Patrick Rishe (www.patrickrishe.com), and I'm a Professor of Economics and the
Director of the Sports Business Program at Washington University in St. Louis...a Top 20
university nationally. I also write for Forbes, have run a sports consulting practice since 2000,
and am the recent author of a book on leadership and strategy in the sports industry...which
leans heavily on insights from 50 of America's leading sports business executives.
I recently learned that my friend of nearly 25 years, Joe Somodi, is running for the vacated
seat in District 1. Mr. Somodi and I became acquainted in college at Binghamton University
in NYS in 1994, and have stayed in touch thereafter. As such, I'm uniquely qualified to lend
this group insights of Mr. Somodi's qualities and characteristics which would make him
ideally suited to join your group.
Attached, please find my letter of support for Joe. I've also submitted these comments
through the online portal.
Best regards, and thank you for your time and consideration.

RE: Joseph Somodi’s Candidacy for District 1
DATE: 1/9/19
This Dr. Patrick Rishe (www.patrickrishe.com), and I'm a Professor of Economics and the Director of the Sports
Business Program at Washington University in St. Louis...a Top 20 university nationally. I also write for Forbes,
have run a sports consulting practice since 2000, and am the recent author of a book on leadership and strategy in
the sports industry...which leans heavily on insights from 50 of America's leading sports business executives.
I recently learned that my friend of nearly 25 years, Joe Somodi, is running for the vacated seat in District 1. Mr.
Somodi and I became acquainted in college at Binghamton University in NYS in 1994, and have stayed in touch
thereafter. As such, I'm uniquely qualified to lend this group insights of Mr. Somodi's qualities and characteristics
which would make him ideally suited to join your group.
If I learned anything from my book project in my research on leadership when speaking with the high-profile
executives I had the pleasure of meeting, it was the importance for leaders to (1) be good listeners, (2) be well-
informed, and (3) be "bridge-builders".
Without question, Mr. Somodi possesses each of these attributes in large quantities. He's an excellent listener
and communicator, he enjoys consuming information and being educated on issues important to the community,
and he genuinely cares about people.
Apart from these necessary attributes, he is - as you saw from his interview several days ago - articulate, good
natured, and carries a sense of diversity and youthful exuberance that would serve as an energetically positive
"shot-in-the-arm" to both the council's make-up and the community as a whole.
While Mr. Somodi is a relative newcomer to the community, it's my sense that his reason for running for District 1
stems from his deep affection for the Fort Collins community, and a sense of empowerment he's felt from several
community members encouraging him to run for this vacated seat. This latter fact alone speaks volume of how he
would be received by the community at large.
I'm excited for your community, as it appears to be a wonderful place to live/work/play. But I'd be even more
excited if Mr. Somodi were to obtain a seat at your distinguished table. Because he brings to that table both the
passion, the intelligence, the thoughtfulness, and the humility I suspect you would want in a colleague.
I plan on sharing these same sentiments in the online application form, but I wanted to take the extra time/effort
to reach out to you personally via email to express my thoughts regarding Mr. Somodi's qualifications.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please reach out if you have follow-up questions.

Subject: Susan Gutowsky Support for City Council
Date: Sunday, January 13, 2019 9:24:20 AM
Hello,
I am writing this letter of support for Susan Gutowsky for a seat on the Fort Collins City Council. Susan
has been a Director for the Poudre School District Board of Education for several years, serving with
passion for her school district and city, objectivity, passion and commitment. It is through this work that I
know Susan and feel that I can speak to her strengths. In the past several years, Susan has been key
in identifying areas of need in the school district and advocating for advancement of these areas. An
example of her advocacy and support is the recent bond passed to assist in Poudre School District to
build three new schools in the coming year to address growth and space challenges in current schools.
When making decisions or prior to advocating for particular topics, Susan takes the time to understand
the topic, ask questions, and examine data and information in an effort to make a good decision.
Personally, I find Susan extremely approachable, open minded, reasonable, honest and engaging. She
approaches her role as a Director on the Poudre School District Board of Education seriously and with
great passion, willing to take the time to know those who she represents, the students who benefit from
her service and the topics being brought forth. I have no doubt that she would do the same for the City of
Fort Collins on the City Council.
In addition to Susan’s role on the school board, she is an avid Colorado State University supporter and
active community member who loves Fort Collins. She engages through service to this community
desiring to positively impact those who live in Fort Collins. Susan is given my highest recommendation
for a seat on the City Council. I have no doubt that she would immediately make a difference for those
whom she would represent.
Sincerely,
Sarah Belleau

City Leadership,
I have known Susan Gutowsky through Rotary, through our church (First United
Methodist) and through her work on the PSD School Board of Education. Her
passion for service is unparalleled and her commitment to lead has been tireless.
My closest work with Susan has been her leadership of Rotary’s Scholarships
Committee, where she has served as Chair for the past 3 years. Her work has
resulted in a revised and revitalized Scholarships program, leading the effort to select
worthy recipients, and award between $20,000 and $30,000 per year to needy and
qualified students.
The committee consists of a diverse group of Rotarians, who care deeply about
students, but are all strongly opinionated (as they should be).
Susan took leadership of the Scholarships committee during my year as club
President, when some members questioned whether Rotary’s scholarships were
needed at all, and whether they were being well used. Her leadership turned that
perception around completely, bringing full club support back to this important
service. Under her leadership, the committee has selected exceptional, inspirational
and diverse students that represent well, the treasure that is Fort Collins. Our future
is in good hands with these students, and Rotary is proud to support that future.
I would strongly recommend Susan to the City Council and would endorse her
candidacy in future elections.
Thank you for considering Susan Gutowsky.

Subject: District 1 Candidate selection
Date: Friday, January 11, 2019 5:22:30 PM
Hello - I am sending my comments via e-mail since they do not fit in the on-line
comment boxes. I hope that is ok!
Thank you so much for the opportunity to express my thoughts on District 1 and our
representative. At
this time I am not endorsing any one candidate but rather am putting down some topics I feel
are very
important to District 1 that I hope a new representative will be evaluated on.
1. Poudre River – By far the largest stretch of the Poudre as it runs through incorporated Fort
Collins is through District 1. Yet only one candidate named it in their written interview, and
no
one mentioned it in their verbal interviews (although kudos to the whitewater park were given
by one candidate and acknowledgement of climate change was mentioned by another). I hope
that whoever is chosen will be someone who loves our river and is willing to fight for its
health
and recognition. I do not often hear Council mention the river, and I am not sure why that is.
Even the new City Plan document does not specifically talk about the Poudre and how much
of a
treasure it is to our city. Seems we are at a critical point to study the economic costs to Fort
Collins that could come about with low flows and river degradation, and then weigh these
costs
against those we would incur if we could “borrow” water from Thornton, run it through town,
and then help with water quality at the take out. If that is not deemed beneficial to our City, at
least I would like to hear Council discuss the health of the Poudre and how we will keep it
vibrant. Otherwise the whitewater park, the Poudre trail, and the River District as a whole (all
in
District 1) will be impacted both aesthetically and economically.
2. Growth – Most candidates seemed to embrace more density for housing, and I feel this is a
good
thing in certain areas like the Mulberry corridor, Montava, parts of North College, some mid-
town locations on College. I would hope that they would fight for architecturally pleasing
designs. To focus on my personal concern - I did not hear or read anything about how existing
historic neighborhoods most impacted (like Alta Vista) would be protected from negative
aspects
of this growth. One candidate did speak of the Mountain Vista Subarea Plan, but as I have
pointed out to various City staff in the past, Alta Vista is not included in this plan. I hope our
new
representative will be aware of our neighborhood that has been somewhat ignored by city
improvements, and that they will become cognizant of promises made to the neighborhood
regarding impacts from (future) Suniga Rd. and proposed developments.
3. Innovation District (and North College) – To me it seems like this area (and possibly parts
of
Mulberry) are the logical areas to grow innovative businesses, partnership businesses with
CSU,
clean energy and technology hubs, etc. as well as expanding various artistic venues. This is
the
part of town with open areas or areas with the most potential for brownfields development.
With thoughtful housing growth and economic vitality, along with the beauty of the river and
trails, proximity to downtown, and a more diverse population, this area could really be
attractive,
especially for younger workers and their families.
4. Old Town – What’s not to love? I hope our new candidate will embrace the independent
and
small businesses that make our downtown unique!
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. Good luck with your decision,

Dear City Council,
First, thanks for your continued efforts on behalf of our city.
Your civil and honest deliberations are appreciated, especially in a time of such political divisiveness.
I encourage you to consider a candidate to fill the vacant council seat who has exhibited similar characteristics and
has a proven track record as an elected official and unselfish public servant.
I believe current PSD school board member Susan Gutowsky fits this criteria. In addition Susan brings a governing
philosophy based on finding pragmatic solutions to issues over political ideology. She is thoughtful in deliberations,
diligent in her research, and careful to consider unintended consequences in her responsible decision making.
I worked with Susan in my capacity as PSD School Board President for four years and can attest to her work ethic
and genuine love for this community.
Besides her experience and competency she is courteous and respectful as a colleague and open to considering many
perspectives with the end goal being to do what is in the common good.
Susan Gutowsky would be a great addition to City Council and hope you give her every consideration.
Sincerely,
Tom Balchak

1. Kevin Astle I sure hope that you are in the running and gain a seat Jerry Gavaldon. I try not to be
negative though I think that we need someone that has different views than a current Council
Member that used to be a member of the Fort Collins Police force.
2.
Donna Bryant Jerry Gavaldon I agree! RUN!
3. Sally Hearne Carbone I want to endorse Jerry Gavaldon in his pursuit of the open Council position
in Fort Collins.
Jerry is the most enthusiastic citizen in Ft. Collins. He was born to serve his community. His pride in
the city - past, present, and future - is without parallel. He comes from a large community-serving
family with deep roots in northern Colorado. Hard work, diligence, fairness, and open-mindedness
were modeled for him by his mother, Isabella Gavaldon, and his siblings.
As much as any other attribute, Jerry is kind. He is a warm and welcoming gentleman to all people.
That said, he will not roll over and acquiesce to pressure about issues he doesn't agree with.
However, he believes in healthy discussions and respectful listening. He always educates himself
extensively before forming opinions and positions. You will not find a better informed, dedicated, or
reliable candidate for the Council opening.
Jerry's impressive life of careers, volunteerism, and generosity have readied him for the
responsibilities and rigor of the job, which simply must include the ability to communicate
congenially with Council members, citizens, business owners, and politicians. Again, this is a natural
fit for Jerry, as proven by his many associations with all of those factions and many more, like his
knowledge of and close working relationship with several areas of CSU's history and development.
Jerry Gavaldon is the ideal person to fill the Council's vacancy!
4. Guy M Blasi I am endorsing Jerry Gavaldon. He has the expertise, know how and will always have
the voters back.
