RE: 10-29-18 LPT Follow-up – W. Mulberry Street Pilot Project
Background:
This memorandum is in response to the 10-29-18 LPT comment:
Noted the West Mulberry Street Pilot Project has provided cuts in curbing to allow for backyard
gate access, but it looks choppy. How will staff provide feedback to the neighborhoods and
evaluate the project?
Response:
Staff met with residents adjacent to the curb-protected bike lanes (eastbound bike lane, just east of
Rogers Park) to discuss backyard gate access needs, and ultimately removed sections of the bike
lane curb to facilitate vehicular access at five locations. Staff notified these residents prior to removals
and made field adjustments to the curb alongside residences to accommodate planned uses.
Following the completion of the curb cuts staff contacted the neighbors once again to see if there
were any additional questions or concerns related to the curb protected bike lanes or the overall
Mulberry project. The neighbors have not shared any other questions or comments at this time. Staff
will follow up with residents in the next couple months to seek further input regarding the curbing and
curb cuts. In addition, a postcard has been mailed to residents along the entire corridor inviting
feedback on the W. Mulberry Corridor Project.
In addition to the access cuts to the curb protection, staff reduced the delineators along the curb-
protected bike lanes and bike rail. Approximately half the delineators along the bike rail and curb
protection were removed to help simplify the appearance of the protection while still maintaining
adequate vertical bike lane separation. Staff will continue to monitor and evaluate each form of bike
lane protection and will make field modifications where necessary.
