HomeMy WebLinkAboutMemo - Read Before Packet - 3/7/2017 - Memorandum From Fort Collins Area Chamber Of Commerce Re: Appropriate Use Of Public Space (Agenda Item #20)February 28, 2017 Fort Collins City Council 300 LaPorte Ave. Fort Collins, CO 80521 Dear Mayor Troxell, Mayor-Pro Tem Horak and Council Members Campana, Cunniff, Martinez, Overbeck, and Stephens; As you know, Fort Collins has experienced challenges with disruptive behaviors around the city, which has caused numerous challenges and frustration among downtown visitors, business owners, and residents. It is challenging to find a community balance between consequences and compassion, and we appreciate the thoughtfulness of the Council in considering an Appropriate Use of Public Spaces ordinance. We encourage the Council to continue to consider the impact of disruptive behaviors on business owners and residents and to take action. A small step, like prohibiting the storage of public property in the right of way, can result in a positive impact. We also encourage the Council to have a broader view of the area encompassed by the Appropriate Use of Public Spaces Ordinance. Limiting enforcement to the only the “Smoke Free Zone” of downtown could result in an unintended consequence of simply moving the behavior rather than ending it. Thank you for your continued effort to make Fort Collins a community that we can all enjoy. Sincerely, Fort Collins Area Chamber of Commerce David L.
