RE: Climate Mayors’ Letter to President-elect Trump
The Energy Board recommends that City Council adopt resolution 2017-05 recommending that
the mayor of Ft. Collins sign the Mayors’ National Climate Action Agenda open letter to
President-elect Donald Trump on Climate Action. We reached this decision after a lengthy
debate that was informed by Mayor Troxell’s January 3
rd
letter to the President-elect, the
Environmental Services Department’s comparison of the Paris Agreement to City of Fort Collins
policies, and an account by the Resource Conservation Manager of the dependence of Fort
Collins greenhouse gas reduction programs on federal funding.
We feel strongly that American cities need the federal government to work closely with us to
achieve our community’s and our nation’s climate change goals. The deployment of renewable
generation and energy conservation measures in Fort Collins is greatly enabled by the federal tax
credits and deductions that flow directly to our citizens. Signing this letter will be an act of
leading together with other cities to address climate change. Also, the signing of this letter
would be consistent with the 2015 letter signed by a group of mayors, including Mayor Troxell,
who urged the Obama Administration to complete the United Nations negotiations that lead to
the Paris Agreement for which this letter expresses support.
Respectfully submitted on behalf of the Energy Board,
Peter M. O’Neill, Chairperson
Energy Board
