Gertig, Utilities Executive Director RE: Abandonment of Legacy Hot Shot Equipment Bottom Line: Fort Collins Utilities will abandon existing Hot Shot legacy equipment effective January 1, 2017 based on the following reasons:  necessary Hot Shot devices are antiquated and no longer supported  effective transition to the Peak Partners program has occurred, as managed through the Advanced Meter Fort Collins program, utilizing current smart meters Extensive customer outreach has been managed over the last year to replace and/or retrieve the legacy equipment. Customers who have not yet responded will receive a postcard in early December as a final notice before the legacy devices are abandoned in place at the customer’s location; see attachment. Summary: The Hot Shot program was initiated in 1982. It was the first demand-side management program at Fort Collins Utilities, and consisted of a load control device installed on customers’ electric water heaters. At the height of the program, there were approximately 2,200 participating customers. Utilities stopped installing the devices in 2009. In 2013, as part of the Advanced Meter Fort Collins program, the “Peak Partners” program was developed, based on the smart meter technology, to manage demand response into the 21 st century. Since 2014, Utilities has managed an extensive communication effort with existing Hot Shot customers to transition the devices to the upgraded Peak Partners program. Approximately 800 customers have not responded to Utilities to manage the transition to Peak Partners.
