HomeMy WebLinkAboutMemo - Mail Packet - 3/15/2016 - Memorandum From Susie Gordon Re: Recycling Question: Do Plastic Caps On Bottles Get RecycledMemo Date: February 29, 2016 To: Darin Atteberry, Fort Collins City Manager From: Mark Snedecor, Waste Management Director of Recycling Operations Scott Hutchings, Waste Management Public Affairs Four Corners Area I understand that there was some recent confusion regarding what materials we accept for processing – specifically whether we take plastic bottles with or without caps. To dispel any confusion, I can confirm that Waste Management processes plastic bottles with or without caps at our Franklin Street Material Recovery Facility in Denver. The facility uses optical sorting units to separate plastic bottles (with caps and without) from the rest of the material stream. For reference, I’ve attached some photos of outbound bales of plastic (“PET”) clearly showing bottles with and without caps ready for shipment to the end users. These photos were taken on Wednesday, February 24. Waste Management is proud of our recycling operations in Colorado and the service we provide to our customers. I would like to extend an open invitation to members of your staff or the City Council to visit the facility and see first-hand how it operates. Feel free to contact me if you are interested and we will schedule a tour (msnedecor@wm.com; 602-721-5180). Thank you for your business. We value our partnership with Fort Collins.
