While we live in a city where many enjoy excellent biking and walking paths, many people living here do not. Attached is my letter of support for three offers that are ranked “below the line”: FC Walks Program, Safe Routes to School Strategic Traffic Infrastructure program and Safe Routes to School – School Rotation Schedule. Combined, these three offers will provide much needed programming and infrastructure that I hope will focus on our schools with the highest free and reduced lunch numbers and low-income neighborhoods. -- Anne Genson Executive Director, Sproutin' Up Thanks for taking the time to hear about walking and biking in our community. I know that for many people, walking and biking is a luxury or something they do when they don’t want to drive. But for my group of walkers and cyclists, oftentimes it is our only option for transportation and sometimes it can get downright scary. I run a non-profit, Sproutin’ Up, and we do lots of awesome things but one of the elements of our program is gardening with youth from under-resourced neighborhoods. One of the neighborhoods we work with is Poudre Valley Mobile Home Park. Every week during the summer you’ll see us biking with 14 kids ages 10-14 from 2025 North College to our garden at The Food Bank for Larimer County on Blue Spruce. The route isn’t long, but it’s quite scary and often dangerous when riding with inexperienced, excited kids right next to fast moving cars or even semis. I encourage you to look carefully at this stretch of highway and consider if you would feel safe riding or walking there with your own children. Let’s make all of Fort Collins safe for everyone. ~Anne Genson Executive Director, Sproutin’ Up http://www.sproutinup.org/ "A nonprofit organization that offers free farmers' markets in under-resourced neighborhoods and teaches young people gardening skills."
