HomeMy WebLinkAboutReport - Mail Packet - 7/29/2014 - Memorandum From Jill Stilwell And Ellen Martin Re: 2014 Art In Public Places Midyear Report1 ART IN PUBLIC PLACES 2014 MIDYEAR REPORT fcgov.com/artspublic COMPLETED PROJECTS Mason (MAX) Corridor Artist Robert Tully worked with the project team to develop art for the MAX stations. The artist designed functional elements, including windscreens, benches, light poles, and way-finding beacons. The artist also created stone panels with transportation themes for the South Transit Center. Artist Robert Tully and Jim Green worked together to develop sound art for the stations. Nix Farm Office Building “The Great Sense of Passing Through” Artist Mario Miguel Echevarria painted a mural covering the walls and ceiling of the vestibule in the new Nix Office Building. The vestibule is the entryway into the Natural Areas offices and the mural is of a Natural Area. Reservoir Ridge Natural Area “Ghost Kitchen” Artist Joe McGrane created welded steel “windows,” which frame the silhouette cutouts of some common birds, animals, and insects that visit the area. The windows mark the entry into the space, designed for sitting, which includes a low-relief bronze map of the Reservoir Ridge Trail experience as an interactive game board the public can enjoy. 1 2 2 CURRENT PROJECTS IN PROGRESS Mural Projects Transforms Electrical Cabinets In cooperation with Fort Collins Utilities Light and Power, this year APP is commissioning sixteen local artists and one non-profit group to transform Fort Collins electrical transformer cabinets into works of art. Four of the cabinets are on the MAX Corridor. This year APP also has two special electrical transformer cabinet projects. APP is currently working with the City Manager’s Office, Visit Fort Collins, and the Downtown Business Association on the Pro Chal- lenge transformer cabinet mural/monument . The cabinet is located on the SW corner of Remington & Mag- nolia and Mary Harnett is painting her mural. The APP Program has also developed a process for interested parties to sponsor transformer cabinet murals for the city. The Bohemian Foundation is sponsoring a cabi- net behind the Lyric Cinema in Old Town, and the selected artist is Terry McNerney. This program, now in its ninth year, is a graffiti mitigation program. The program also adds art into our community while creating a buzz of interest about Fort Collins locally, regionally, and nationally. The program has completed 164 unique murals to date. Fort Collins Museum of Discovery Project After a nationwide search, artist Ned Kahn was selected to work on this project. Museum staff has asked the artist to develop unique, inspiring, and educational artworks with utility inspired themes of water, sustaina- bility, and energy. Mr. Kahn is currently developing concepts for the site. Integrated Recycling Center Purchasing has approved using artists Tim Upham and Todd Kundla for this project. The artists will starting meeting with the team in the near future. Teddi Parker Ren Burke Jennifer Ivanovic Susannah Franklin Mary Harnett Lisa Cameron Russell 3 3 Timberline and Horsetooth Intersection Artist Lisa Cameron Russell has presented the final design to the APP Board. Project construction is scheduled for 2015. River Restoration Project at Woodward Artist Tim Upham was selected from the Design Consultant List. He is currently developing art concepts with the Project Team. North College Improvement Project Artist Andy Dufford, who was part of Phase I of the project, is meeting with the Project team to develop concepts for Phase II of the project. The goal is to extend the art elements that provide pedestrian lighting and way-finding for each block along the corridor. Udall Water Quality Pond This Project Team will select an APP artist from the Design Consultant List. CURRENT PROJECTS IN PROGRESS, CONTINUED Pickle Plant Project Artist Robert Tully will resume work on a gateway art project for this site shortly. It is located near the intersection of Mulberry and Riverside. Southeast Community Park Artist Tim Upham is working with the Project Team to develop concepts for this site. North College Improvement Project Phase I West Vine Basin Artist Joe McGrane was selected for this project. This project has been approved by City Council. Vine and Shields Intersection Artist Tim Upham was selected from the Design Consultant List. This team will start meeting soon. Senior Center Expansion Project Artist Carolyn Braaksma is working with the project team on a concept for the site. West Vine Basin Linden Street Pocket Park Project Artist Andy Dufford is developing concepts for this site. He is refining park designs and the educational message. The site is located on the corner of Linden and Willow. 4 COMMUNITY PROJECTS Every year the Art in Public Places Program coordinates projects that engage our community. This year the projects include trash can paintings, transformer cabinet murals, and granite pavers sandblasted with children’s drawings. 4 Storm Drain Markers In cooperation with the Utility Department, APP promoted an open design competition for community members to create artwork for storm drain markers. The project is intended to engage the community in an educational program on the land/water connection and maintaining the water quality in local streams. Pedestrian Paver Competition In 2014 we will be producing another fifteen pedestrian pavers to be installed in city sidewalks. Drawings are solicited early in the year from local children ages 3–18, with selected drawings being sandblasted into 16" square granite pavers. This project started in 2002. Paver images and locations are posted on the APP website image gallery. We have produced 196 pavers to date. Trash Can Paintings This project is a collaboration between APP and the City’s Parks Department. Community members, schools, and art groups are invited to paint trash cans that are then placed in parks around Fort Collins. This program adds beauty and interest to the functional trash cans seen in our city’s parks. Isaiah Franklin, Age 6 Mayte Hernandez, Age 15 CeCe Abrams, Age 18 Mayte Hernandez 5 CREATING PARTNERSHIPS Following the guidelines of Plan Fort Collins, under High Performance Community, the APP program strives to forge partnerships and provide a range of public engagement opportunities. The APP Program is partnering with the Downtown Development Authority, Bohemian Foundation, and local businesses to ex- pand the presence of art in Fort Collins. Pianos About Town This is the third year of a collaborative project between Bohemian Foundation, Downtown Development Authority and APP. This project kicked off in May and will result in eleven artists painting murals on pianos in Old Town Square through October and two painting inside during the winter months. The working pian- os are placed randomly around town for the community to discover and play, adding color and spontaneous musical happenings to Fort Collins. Forty pianos have been painted as part of the program, with another thirteen scheduled to be painted this year. This year’s theme celebrates Fort Collins 150th Birthday. Gale Whitman Amelia Caruso Jolan Von Plutnzer FC150 Exhibit, FCMoD APP will be included in the Museum’s 150th exhibit. A painted piano and transformer cabinet will be fea- tured in the exhibit. COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES & OUTREACH • APP staff presented programs to the CSU Osher Program, students at Bennett Elementary, and the Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership FC. • Staff continues to advise other cities/programs on how to start Transformer Cabinet Mural and Pianos About Town Programs Transformer Cabinet Painting at Earth Day Event APP and Utilities partnered to share the Transformer Cabinet Mural Program with the community. Artist Jennifer Ivanovic started her cabinet mural at the Earth Day event. 5 6 6 ART DONATIONS One of the functions of the APP Board is to review all donations of art to the City. INFORMATION SHARING GIS Mapping APP is currently working with GIS to update APP sites and projects in the city’s mapping system APP Website Artists can now sign up for Visual Arts/APP updates and/or current Artist Opportunities on the APP web- site. The APP website has information and images of current and past projects and downloadable maps of APP project locations, Transformer Cabinet Murals, and Pedestrian Pavers: Most of the APP project construction and installation takes place in the warmer months of the year. Late fall through early spring has the artists working with the project teams on the design phase. STEWARDSHIP Maintenance The program continues to use our artistic expertise and communication with the artists to maintain the APP art collection. Bike Bench Art Donation Artists Todd Kundla and Andrew Bohn are creating a sculpture, bench, and a bike repair station to be placed on the Poudre Trail near the Gardens on Spring Creek this summer. It is a donation from the Brooks family and has been approved by the APP board.
