“Ghost Kitchen”
Artist Joe McGrane created welded steel “windows,” which frame the

CURRENT PROJECTS IN PROGRESS
Mural Projects Transforms Electrical Cabinets
In cooperation with Fort Collins Utilities Light and Power, this year APP is commissioning sixteen
local artists and one non-profit group to transform Fort Collins electrical transformer cabinets into works of
art. Four of the cabinets are on the MAX Corridor.
This year APP also has two special electrical transformer cabinet projects. APP is currently working
with the City Manager’s Office, Visit Fort Collins, and the Downtown Business Association on the Pro Chal-
lenge transformer cabinet mural/monument . The cabinet is located on the SW corner of Remington & Mag-
nolia and Mary Harnett is painting her mural. The APP Program has also developed a process for interested
parties to sponsor transformer cabinet murals for the city. The Bohemian Foundation is sponsoring a cabi-
net behind the Lyric Cinema in Old Town, and the selected artist is Terry McNerney.
This program, now in its ninth year, is a graffiti mitigation program. The program also adds art into
our community while creating a buzz of interest about Fort Collins locally, regionally, and nationally. The
program has completed 164 unique murals to date.
Fort Collins Museum of Discovery Project
After a nationwide search, artist Ned Kahn was selected to work on this project. Museum staff has asked the
artist to develop unique, inspiring, and educational artworks with utility inspired themes of water, sustaina-

COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Every year the Art in Public Places Program coordinates projects that engage our community. This year the
projects include trash can paintings, transformer cabinet murals, and granite pavers sandblasted with
children’s drawings.
4
Storm Drain Markers
In cooperation with the Utility Department, APP promoted an open design
competition for community members to create artwork for storm drain
markers. The project is intended to engage the community in an educational
program on the land/water connection and maintaining the water quality in
local streams.
Pedestrian Paver Competition
In 2014 we will be producing another fifteen pedestrian pavers to be installed in city sidewalks. Drawings
are solicited early in the year from local children ages 3–18, with selected drawings being sandblasted into
16" square granite pavers. This project started in 2002. Paver images and locations are posted on the APP
website image gallery. We have produced 196 pavers to date.
Trash Can Paintings
This project is a collaboration between APP and the City’s Parks Department. Community members,
schools, and art groups are invited to paint trash cans that are then placed in parks around Fort Collins. This
program adds beauty and interest to the functional trash cans seen in our city’s parks.

CREATING PARTNERSHIPS
Following the guidelines of Plan Fort Collins, under High Performance Community, the APP program
strives to forge partnerships and provide a range of public engagement opportunities. The APP Program is
partnering with the Downtown Development Authority, Bohemian Foundation, and local businesses to ex-
pand the presence of art in Fort Collins.
Pianos About Town
This is the third year of a collaborative project between Bohemian Foundation, Downtown Development
Authority and APP. This project kicked off in May and will result in eleven artists painting murals on pianos
in Old Town Square through October and two painting inside during the winter months. The working pian-
os are placed randomly around town for the community to discover and play, adding color and spontaneous
musical happenings to Fort Collins. Forty pianos have been painted as part of the program, with another
thirteen scheduled to be painted this year. This year’s theme celebrates Fort Collins 150th Birthday.
