Subject: Affordable Housing Board recommendations on mall
Dear City Council,
In our role of advising council on issues pertaining to housing affordability, the Affordable Housing Board
discussed the addendum to the Foothills mall agreement at our May 1
st
meeting, and thought it may be
meaningful for Council to hear our views on the issue, as you consider your decisions on the matter.
Our Board approved the following motion on May 1, 2014 by a vote of 7-0:
The Affordable Housing Board encourages City Council to approve the addendum to the Foothills mall
agreement because:
(1) the Affordable Housing Board strongly supports the production of additional housing
units, whether qualified affordable or not, near to high frequency transport opportunities (such as Max
and the connecting service to MAX), near to Transit Oriented Development overlay zones, and near
retail;
(2) the Affordable Housing Board feels that the mall project would help stop the leakage of sales tax
which is currently being diverted out of the city, and thus reduces the potential income to the general
fund, which in turn limits the funds available for affordable housing;
(3) the Affordable Housing Board feels that it is important to have easy access to goods and services in
the core of our city available to all Fort Collins citizens.
We know you have a big decision ahead of you, and wanted to let you know our views on the issue as you make
your considerations.
