Dear Mr. Atteberry and Mrs. Sowder,
I have spoke with my committee in Student Council and my committee head, Zack
Feuer, and I will be able to attend the City Council Work Session on April 8th. Also, I
apologize for keeping both of you waiting for so long, this week has been incredibly busy!
However, my committee and I have had the time to get our objectives and points in order
with the issue at our school.
If you could voice this message for the Student Council of Fossil Ridge High School during
this meeting, we would be very appreciative:
"Fossil Ridge High School has a smoking issue of students and non-students smoking
both marijuana and tobacco just off school grounds during lunch break and after school. As
you can imagine, this is putting a negative outlook on Fossil Ridge in our community, and
influencing younger kids.
My Committee has decided that the only way to intervene with this issue is to get the City
of Fort Collins Council involved. Fossil Ridge High School administration can not do
anything towards eliminating the problem because the kids are just off school grounds, feet
from the Fossil Ridge campus. The kids have been identified to be smoking both
substances, marijuana and tobacco, predictably every day. My committee was wondering if
a "No Smoking Zone" or smoke ban could be put in place where the students are smoking.
This would prevent the negative image of Fossil Ridge High School in our community.
Thank you all for what you have done to help our community grow into something that

Hi Dylan,
City Manager, Darin Atteberry, told me that you and a few Fossil Ridge’s Student
Council members are interested in attending the City Council Work Session on
April 8th
when they will discuss potential expansions to the City’s smoking
regulations.
City Council Work Session meetings are open to the public, although there is not
an opportunity to provide public input during work sessions. If you have specific
input you’d like to provide City Council members, an effective way is to send
them an email with your thoughts prior to the work session (you can send it to
cityleaders@fcgov.com and it will go to all of the City Council members including
the Mayor as well as the City Manager, City Clerk, and City Attorney).
There are four topics on the agenda that Council will discuss that evening. The
meeting starts at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall, 300 LaPorte Ave. I don’t know what
order the topics will be discussed yet, but I can let you know when I find out. Of
course, you are welcome to come for the entire meeting – it usually lasts 3-4
hours (sometimes longer). Also, you can find all the materials that will be
presented to Council on-line at www.fcgov.com/cityleadership then click on
Council Agendas. The material for April 8th
should be available on-line by Friday,
April 4th
.
If you and other student council members are able to attend, it would be great to
meet you! I would also like to introduce you to our City Manager and City
Council members, too, if we get the opportunity.
Please, let me know if you have any questions about how the City Council Work
Sessions work, or anything else. Thank you very much for your interest in this
topic!
