Friedman 619 Holyoke Court Fort Collins, CO 80525 Dear Ms. Friedman, Mayor City Hall 300 LaPorte Ave. PO Box 580 Fort Collins, CO 80522 970.416.2154 970.224.6107 - fax fcgov.com Thank you for writing to me recently about gun legislation. 1, like you, believe that Fort Collins is a very special place, and one that I've chosen to make my home for many years. I've participated in the business sector, raised a family here, and am delighted to serve the community as a past Councilmember and now Mayor. I deeply care about our residents, their safety, and the wellbeing of those who call Fort Collins home. I have not signed onto the US Conference of Mayor's letter to Congress for several reasons. First, the City of Fort Collins is not a dues -paying member of the United States Conference of Mayors. The US Conference of Mayors is a dues -paying organization that cities must join. The City of Fort Collins is not a member. We do not participate. Secondly, I do not have the authority to sign on behalf of City Council. Fort Collins has a Council - Manager form of government, not a 'strong mayor' form of government, which is common in larger cities, especially in the eastern part of the U.S. Under the Council -Manager form of government, I as the Mayor do not have any more or less authority than any other member of City Council — we act as a body. Thus, 1 cannot presume to speak for them on matters of federal legislation. In light of the national tragedies, our municipality will be working with other area entities — Larimer County, the Poudre School District, Police and Fire, to reduce risk and danger to our community and particularly schools. Thank you for taking time to write with your concern. I really appreciate hearing from you. Sincerely, ' Karennat Mayor /sek cc: City Councihnembers Darin Atteberry, City Manager John Hutto, Police Chief SUSAN J. FRIEDMAN 619 Holyoke Court Fort Collins, CO 80525 January 9, 2012 •ffiayor Karen Weitkunat 1P.O. Box 580 1 Fort Collins, CO 80522 Dear Mayor Weitkunat: NGA'1131IM3 ice We need our elected officials to lead the way in any reform to our gun legislation. I trust that the letter to the editor that I read recently in the Coloradoan stating that you did not join the Mayors of other Colorado cities in signing a letter backing gun reform legislation was not correct. You know as well as anyone that Fort Collins is a special place. Do we want the same thing to happen here that happened in Connecticut. How would you feet? I do not oppose people having guns for hunting or even for home protection. I do, however, strongly oppose the need for military/assault weapons and large ammunition strips. There is no place in our cities for these weapons. Please take a stand on gun reform legislation. Take your part in being responsible for the safety of your citizens. Sincerely, Susan J. Friedman
