Re: Art in Public Places Mason Corridor (MAX) Art Update
The purpose of this memo is to provide an update on the art for the Mason Corridor (MAX)
project.
Art in Public Places (APP) selected artist Robert Tully through an open competition to develop
functional components for the transportation corridor project. Working with the project team,
Mr. Tully has designed functional elements that create a unique, iconic, and innovative identity
for MAX. The team aims to create consistency along the corridor while providing opportunities
for individualization and neighborhood context at stations.
WINDSCREEN DESIGNS
Mr. Tully has designed unique images for the glass windscreens at each of the MAX stations.
Each artwork is derived from an aspect of the neighborhood adjacent to the station and the
station design (see attached).
Throughout the design process, staff engaged community stakeholders in a collaborative station
design process to gain an understanding of history and context along the Mason Corridor and to cater
to community needs. At the request of City Council, Open Houses were held to gather input from the
community on the station windscreen designs. The Open Houses were held at Northside Aztlan
Community Center, Council Tree Library, Opera Galleria, Colorado State University's Transit
Center in the Lory Student Center, Foothills Mall, along with an online survey. Through this
community input the windscreen designs were evaluated and modified as follows:
,fit` Collins
Horsetooth Station
Comments included suggestions to be more literal with the image of Horsetooth Rock, more in
line with the actual physical likeness.
Drake Station
Public feedback showed mixed results for this station. We recommend the artist modify the
design, but keep the animal theme.
Mountain Station
Based on the quantity of comments, we asked the artist to modify the design to capture the theme
of the entertainment activities that take place in Downtown Fort Collins.
ADDITIONAL ART ELEMENTS
(See attached for images of each element)
• Light Poles
Twenty—five light poles will combine hand crafted metal sculptural elements with
commercially available metal components for the station light poles.
• Beacon
Wayfinding beacons will be placed at some of the stations to indicate the direction to the
station. This component was designed by the artist, and will be fabricated by the BRT
contractor.
• Benches
Twenty—four unique benches will be created out of colored concrete (2 to 3 colors) with
stainless steel legs. The benches will be designed to complement the windscreens at each
station and built to fit the space. Benches will have protruding metal corners as an anti -skate
boarding element.
• Sound Element
Mr. Tulley will install speakers and other equipment for sound art in the station. The sounds
will be nature -related. Working in conjunction with nationally known sound artist Jim Green,
Mr. Tulley will develop sound files for the project team to review. The artists also will
propose durations and frequency of play time for consideration. Each of the 12 stations will
have a unique sound file. This will be an independent system, separate from the sound
system for the station information.
• Public Service Company Historical Marker- (Prospect)
To help commemorate the history of the site of the former Public Service Company, Mr.
Tully has designed an historical marker. The sculptural piece will include a plaque and
recycled bricks from that building. He will also develop the signage text with the team.
• South Transit Center Stone Panels
Mr. Tully will design thirty etched stone panels to be recessed into the columns of the
building. The panel images will depict the local history of transportation.

• Form Liners for Concrete Wall
The project will reuse the concrete form liners that artist Barb McKee created for the Red
Fox Meadows Natural Area Project on the walls located at Spring Creek. Ms. McKee has
worked with the team to develop the layout for the form liners and prepared the liners for this
reuse. The budget on this art element is greatly reduced due to the reuse of the city owned
artist created form liners. The budget for this project is $ 7,700
MAX ART BUDGET
The total amount being spent on art from the MAX budget is $224,766, which includes Mr.
Tully's art elements at $192,650, design fees $24,416 and Ms. McKee's form liners $7,700.
NEXT STEPS
The artist continues to work with the Project Team on final designs for the benches,
South Transit Center stone panels and the sound element.
Project team will update City Council as final designs for the art elements are developed.
