PO Box 580 Fort Collins, CO 80522-0580 (970) 221-6540 MEMORANDUM Date: August 1, 2024 To: Mayor and City Council From: Frank Barrett, Assistant Chief Thru: Jeff Swoboda, Chief of Police Kelly DiMartino, City Manager RE: Requested information: Police Services Calls for Service Regarding Fireworks Complaints Request: Council requested information regarding calls to Police Services and Poudre Fire Authority (PFA) regarding fireworks complaints from July 1 through July 7. Background: Between July 1 through July 7, Police Services received 121 calls for service regarding fireworks complaints. The majority of those calls were on July 4, with 65 calls. Out of those 121 calls for service, officers contacted someone on 27 of those calls, which resulted in 1 citation and 23 warnings being issued. Fort Collins Police Services Results: • 27 calls resulted in contact with a person(s). • 1 call resulted in a citation being issued for the use of fireworks. • 23 calls resulted in verbal warnings being issued. • Police Services confiscated fireworks on 4 contacts. • 9 complaint calls were sent out to officers working the street for awareness. • 46 calls for service resulted in it being quiet when officers arrived. • 19 calls for service resulted in subjects being gone when officers arrived. • 23 calls for service resulted in officers being unable to locate the source of the fireworks complaint. Information from PFA via Chief Derek Bergsten: During this period of time, no citations were issued regarding fireworks. PFA responded to three grass fires and a garage fire caused by fireworks.
