Summary
The Mediation Program and the Restorative Justice Program began more than 20 years ago, as two
separate programs. The Restorative Justice Program started in the City’s Police Department while the
Mediation Program started in Neighborhood Resources Department. In 2013 Restorative Justice Services
moved organizationally into Neighborhood Services (CDNS ) in order to collaborate closely with the
Mediation Program, to share volunteers and training, and to strengthen and expand community services.
As a temporary measure, the programs combined the two program names into one “Mediation and
Restorative Justice Services.” This name no longer fits.
Why Rebrand?
Now is the time to recognize that our two programs have become something more, something larger.
Over the past 10 years, the programs have developed many new processes in response to community
needs, internal and external. Our staff and volunteer team have expanded as well as our working space.
The long-held vision is to have an umbrella of services offering a full range of processes to address the
needs of any specific situation. By combining the knowledge, skills and training of staff and more than 50
community volunteers, the two original programs have significantly increased the breadth and range of
services available. This new name reflects the new reality.
Brand Concepts:
1. Why conflict transformation?
DocuSign Envelope ID: 679E7E8C-43CE-424D-A1AD-29BA272475F3
o “Transformation” is the term for the leading edge in the evolution of the conflict and
restorative justice fields.
2. Why works?
o The word “W orks” works as both a noun and a verb. Bringing people together for difficult
conversations “really works (verb).” And it does. Our umbrella of services includes the “Works
(noun)” meaning we offer a variety of processes depending on the needs of the situation.
3. Logo
o Designed by Madeline Bechtel [Senior Technician, Graphic Design, CPIO] , the new logo
visually expresses the concept of conflict transformation by showing “that you’re managing
diverse starting points, focus areas, and storylines with the goal of reaching practical
harmony.”
Next Steps
We have announced our new name to our volunteer team and to internal partners, but it is not widely
known. We will have new signage with our new name, brochures, letterhead and other changes that will
identify us here at our location. In the coming year we will roll out public outreach efforts including
updating our website, reaching out to press and strategic community engagement. Staff can also provide
a more formal presentation to Council if desired.
