RE: Request to reinstate snow routes in Fort Collins
Dear Mayor and City Council Members,
The Transportation Board is writing to request City Council consider reinstating snow routes in Fort Collins. Snow
routes, where cars are required to move during snow events, are essential to ensure public safety and enable
efficient snow clearing operations. Over the past few years, Fort Collins has faced severe snowstorms and icy
conditions that have significantly disrupted transportation for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
By reinstating snow routes including maintaining clear and accessible biking and walking facilities, we can address
these issues and foster a safer environment for all road users during winter weather events. Reinstating snow
routes would be a proactive and responsible measure to address the issues associated with winter weather. Having
clearly marked snow routes where cars must be removed during snow events will not only enable effective
snowplowing but also reduce accidents and aid emergency services in reaching their destinations promptly.
Additionally, snow routes would demonstrate our city's commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of its
residents. Residents will appreciate the predictability and clarity of knowing which streets they should vacate
during snow events, thereby allowing snow removal crews to work efficiently and restore normalcy to the
transportation as soon as possible.
We understand that implementing snow routes will require careful planning, coordination, and public awareness
campaigns. However, the Transportation Board believes that the benefits they bring to our community far
outweigh the challenges involved.
In conclusion, we respectfully urge the City Council to take action and reinstate snow routes while giving due
consideration to ensuring clear bicycle and pedestrian facilities during snow events. By doing so, we can enhance
our city's winter preparedness, prioritize the safety of all road users, and support a sustainable and vibrant
community.
Respectfully submitted,
C. Cari Brown, Transportation Board Chair
