Re: Boards and Commission recruitment timing
The Ad Hoc Committee on Boards and Commission started its work in January 2023 and
quickly identified the need to evaluate the timing of annual recruitment in light of the shift in
regular city elections from April to November. The previous annual recruitment was conducted
in September with interviews and Council appointment in October and November.
The below table summarizes the changes to align with this shift. For 2023 only, recruitment will
occur to fill existing vacancies. Boards and Commissions with current vacancies will be open
from April 1 to April 28, 2023.

The following boards and commissions have been identified as having vacancies: Air Quality
Advisory Board, Building Review Commission, Cultural Resources Board, General Employee’
Retirement Committee, Historic Preservation Commission, Human Relations Commission,
Human Services and Housing Fund Board, Land Conservation & Stewardship Board, Natural
Resources Advisory Board, and Youth Advisory Board.
All staff liaisons have been notified of this change and will work with the Public Engagement
Specialist if more vacancies occur from now until April.
This schedule is not in the code so formal Council approval is not needed. However, each
member’s term that ends in December will need to be extended by City Council resolution for
three months until March 31 of the year after their original term expires to align with the new
schedule. Staff will bring forth a resolution prior to December 31 for full Council consideration.
