RE: Glenmoor Pond Landscape Enhancements Project
The Glenmoor Pond is a stormwater detention basin that is located on Taft Hill Road and Glenmoor
Drive and was constructed to provide flood mitigation as part of the larger Canal Importation Ponds
& Outfall Phase II project in 2011. The original vision for this area included a naturalized, open area
similar to Red Fox Meadows, where the functionality of the stormwater system was meant to blend
into the landforms. While this vision was mostly carried out during construction 10+ years ago,
further enhancements have recently been constructed to more closely align with the Nature in the City
program goals of access to nature, high-quality natural spaces and land stewardship.
The enhancements project budget was $250k. Improvements achieved within this budget include:
safer pedestrian walkway along Taft Hill Road, enhanced landscape pockets of pollinator gardens and
trees, installation of a permanent irrigation system, installation of pet waste stations, an outdoor
classroom for neighboring Polaris Expeditionary School, and incorporating Art in Public Places
(APP). The APP artist, Lisa Cameron Russell, is scheduled to install the art piece late this year or in
spring of 2023.
Educational signage is also planned for this site; however, signage design has not yet been finalized.
This process is anticipated to occur later in 2023.
Extensive outreach to the Polaris school has occurred throughout the design and construction phases
of this project. As part of that, City staff has provided site tours to several different middle and high
school classes, attended student presentations on improvements for the site, and connected the APP
artist to students and incorporated their art into the art piece for the site.
Included are several pictures of the site during and after construction that showcase the
improvements!
