RE: 2022 Fort Collins Population Estimate
The purpose of this memo is to provide Council an updated City of Fort Collins population
estimate.
Background
City Planning staff monitors development and demographic trends in order to provide annual
population estimates for the community. This preliminary estimate is prepared at the beginning
of each calendar year and is used until a final population estimate from the State Demography
Office (SDO) is released. Final SDO estimates are typically available a year and a half after the
City publishes its preliminary estimates.
This 2022 estimate is being released later than normal due to interruptions in data reporting as
a result of the pandemic and subsequent delays from the 2020 US Census.
2022 Population Estimate
The City’s preliminary population estimate for January 2022 is 173,682. This represents an
increase of 1,840 persons over the prior estimate for 2021. This preliminary estimate is based
primarily on a net increase of 827 dwelling units from the preceding year. At the beginning of
2022 the community contained 73,373 dwelling units.
Trends
Over the past several years, population growth in Fort Collins has slowed in comparison to
previous five and ten year averages. This slowing mirrors reduced population growth at the
state and national levels and likely partially results from pandemic impacts in 2020 and 2021
which contributed temporarily to reduced construction activity, decreased college and university
student populations, and an increase in vacancy rates.
