Based on the recommendation of City staff, the new neighborhood park proposed on Miles House Avenue in the Bucking Horse neighborhood will be called “Dovetail Park.” The purpose of this memo is to provide Council with background on the selected name. Background The park site is located within the Bucking Horse neighborhood and was part of the historic Johnson and Jessup Family Farms in the 19th and 20th centuries. The park site is organized into several passive and active recreational zones, including a perimeter loop walk with generous native landscape buffer, a multi-purpose green, an activity terrace with a collection of diverse recreational amenities, a naturalistic drainage and a new trail connection. The park design integrates both traditional neighborhood park amenities (basketball, playground, picnic shelter) with unique activities (hammocking, table tennis, corn hole, bocce ball). This approach creates appeal for a diversity of park users, including teenagers and seniors. Dovetail means “to join or fit together well or harmoniously.” This name was selected for the park for several reasons: o The activity terrace, a central feature of the park, is organized into a series of recreational experiences that transition from active to passive uses. The name characterizes the seamless and interconnected nature of these uses. o The park includes non-traditional park amenities, welcoming a range of park users with a diversity of interests. This results in a series of harmonious environments in close proximity. This park advances many of the goals outlined in the 2021 Parks and Recreation Master Plan, including increasing native vegetation in parks, reducing irrigated bluegrass lawn and water consumption, providing equitable access to parks and recreational experiences, improving connections to nature, and providing a place for youth, adults and seniors to get health, stay fit, and connect with others. In addition to the parks and recreation master plan, feedback from community members at several meetings helped guide the project. Page 2 of 2 Next Steps Construction of the park is anticipated to begin in July, with park completion planned for Spring 2023. An informational video about the park has been shared with community members. A link to the video is provided at the park planning web site: https://www.fcgov.com/parkplanning/bucking-horse-park The park name will be revealed to community members following approval. An in-person ribbon cutting event is tentatively planned when the park is complete. Attachments Park plan and renderings
