As a former sustainability specialist for the City who focused on sustainable materials management, specifically construction and demolition waste, I support the non-consensual designation of this property and encourage all of you to do the same. Combined construction and demolition waste make up a substantial portion of the City’s waste stream and the majority of that comes from demolition projects. It has been largely publicized and talked about, but do not let the meth contamination be the reason this structure is lost. Meth contamination is undoubtably an important topic, but remediation work will ultimately be less expensive than the cost of demolition and property disposing of contaminated materials. Counting the embodied energy of the existing materials and off-set demolition waste preserving this home is the most sustainable path forward. In general the City needs to do more to encourage the restoration, reuse and repurposing of existing building inventory (while also requiring that all new structures built are built to be a 100+ year structures) in order to meet its sustainability goals. Beyond the environmental benefits of preserving this structure, the home itself is a beautiful example of late 1800’s architecture with many victorian elements that contribute to a vibrant and diverse neighborhood in ways that a new structure never will. As the owner of a late 1800’s home myself it would truly be devastating to both myself personally and this community as a whole to lose this structure. I encourage Fort Collins to explore more ways to encourage existing homeowners to voluntarily designate their properties, but when necessary in a case such as this we need to approve non-consensual designations.
