MEMORANDUM
DATE:May 18, 2021
TO:Mayor and City Councilmembers
FROM:Darin Atteberry, City Manager
RE:Homeless Advisory Committee Update
_____________________________________________________________________
I’m writing to give you a brief update on the City Manager’s Homelessness Advisory Committee
and some context around the emails you may have seen coming from residents of the Old Town
North neighborhood. For reference about the role of the committee, please see the attached
memo.
At the last committee meeting our consultant facilitator shared a first draft of the committee’s
final report that they have been compiling. Because their meetings are open to the public, Pat
Ferrier from The Coloradoan was observing the meeting and published a story about the
preliminary findings, which include a majority strong preference for further exploration of two
potential locations in the north part of town – 1311 N. College and a County-owned property
near Vine and Redwood.
The final report will include suggestions for further exploration and extensive community
engagement related to potential locations. While the committee has some diverse perspectives
represented, it is not equally balanced across perspectives or inclusive of all perspectives in our
community. The committee is not a majority-rules decision making body, but rather a working
group that is deliberating through this difficult issue in our community and advising on how we,
as a community, might move forward in meeting the agreed-upon need for 24/7 shelter.
You’ll see responses going out to the Old Town North residents shortly and staff will be
attending an upcoming HOA meeting to share clear information about process and future
engagement opportunities.
I will be meeting with the committee on May 21 to directly listen and learn from them on their
findings and recommendations. We then will be sharing this information with Council at a July
work session and exploring next steps.
Please let me know if you have any questions in the meantime.
